FarBar MiniToolBox is an easy way to collect data that can help debug some networking problems.

BleepingComputer Review:
MiniToolBox detects Internet connection issues due to broken or hijacked LSP, proxy settings, and problems with network adapters. It can also be used to detecte search redirections and router hijackings.

The tool has some additional feature like flushing DNS cache, listing installed programs, listing devices in the Devices Manager, enumerating the last 10 Event Viewer errors, enumerating drives, and content of Hosts file.

Download here: FarBar MiniToolBox
  • Run MiniToolBox.exe (no install required).
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Report IE Proxy Settings
    • Report FF Proxy Settings
    • List content of Hosts
    • List IP configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices (Only Problems)
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    • List Minidump Files
    • List Restore Points
  • Click OK
.A Notepad window will open with the results in it. Copy and paste all the data except the User info in a reply here.
A file named Result.txt will also be created in the directory MiniToolBox.exe is run from.

I think it's firefox causing it. AVG is popping up with a box saying firefox is using alot of memory. I looked on the task manager and it said 164,000 for memory with firefox. I closed a few plugins and it is down to 94,000. That still seems like alot. I am not too computer savvy so I am not sure what to close or what to do with the firefox.

Just came home after a few hours and memory usage for firefox is up to 224,000, is that normal?

Uninstall these. Replace AVG with Microsoft Security Essentials,
at least for a while as a test. You'll want the X86 (32 bit) version.
AVG 2013 (Version: 13.0.2904)
AVG 2013 (Version: 13.0.3162)
AVG 2013 (Version: 2013.0.2904)
SpywareBlaster 5.0 (Version: 5.0.0)

Uninstall this just on general principals. In my opiniuon
anything Google is a virus except their search engine.
Google Update Helper (Version: 1.3.21.135)

Uninstall all the outdated versions of Java then download and install
the latest which is JRE 7 Update 21.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 (Version: 1.5.0.20)
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 (Version: 1.5.0.60)
Java 7 Update 13 (Version: 7.0.130)
Java Auto Updater (Version: 2.1.9.0)
Java™ 6 Update 20 (Version: 6.0.200)
Java™ 6 Update 6 (Version: 1.6.0.60)
JavaFX 2.1.1 (Version: 2.1.1)

Uninstall this if you do not use it
Pure Networks Port Magic (Version: 1.2.1393.0)

Event entries had a bunch of mhotkey.exe errors.
mhotkey.exe (Chicony Multimedia Hotkeys) – Details
The program called mhotkey.exe is used to allow multimedia keys
on Chicony keyboards to function correctly. If you stop this
process all of the ‘normal’ keys on the keyboard should still
function, but the multimedia keys will not. Only stop this process
if it is causing instability to your system.

Download and run WinsockXPFix, see if that helps give you a more stable internet.

Just saw your last post. I don't know what is normal for Firefox under XP. Try disabling all Add-ons.

What version of Firefox are you using. Try uninstalling it then downloading and installing the most recent version which is 20.0.1, see if that helps.

If none of this helps, please post the output of Startuplist which shows what programs are starting at boot time.

I don't think I can install Microsoft security essentials because you have to have SP3 and I have never been able to install it without having to do a system restore because I couldn't connect to the internet. I have tried everything to install it including getting help from here. I will try the other suggestions. I have firefox 20 Thank you.

I am looking at my wireless network connection speed and it use to be 54mbps and now it runs 12 to 1 and I think that may be the problem. My laptop works fine but not this desktop. Then AVG pops up with close firefox because of the memory usage.

Try uninstalling the things I mentioned. Then see if you can download SP3 stand alone installer from here:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers

If that works, install it. Once done install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Looks like you are also use the AOL software. Have you considered getting rid of it and just using AOL via your web browser? AOL is another big drag on computers.

I see quite a few things that are starting at boot time that do not need to. Most/all can be disabled via msconfig / Startup tab:

[System Run]
Adobe ARM = "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
EzPrint = "C:\Program Files\Lexmark 2300 Series\ezprint.exe"
IntelAudioStudio = "C:\Program Files\Intel Audio Studio\IntelAudioStudio.exe" BOOT
ledpointer = CNYHKey.exe
LifeCam = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\LifeExp.exe"
Persistence = C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
RemoteControl = "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"
SunKistEM = C:\Program Files\Digital Media Reader\shwiconem.exe

--------------------

Registry 'Run' subkeys:

[User Run]
* AutorunsDisabled *
MSMSGS = "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

[System Run]
* AutorunsDisabled *
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
QuickTime Task = "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
RealTray = C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
Adobe Photo Downloader = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe"
Adobe ARM = "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
CHotkey = mHotkey.exe

Please let me know what you do or don't do so I know what to try next if these things don't help.

I believe I did everything, almost. I haven't uninstalled AVG and added MSE yet, because after I did SP3 and restarted, a box came up in black error system 32/cmd.exe access denied. Usually after my computer is on for a bit, the internet stops and I can't get on, so I have to do a system restore. That is why I have never been able to install SP3. What does that error mean?

Hi... If you are getting the message "Server not found" then there must be some setting problems.

For Mozilla FireFox

Go to Tools>>>Options>>>Advanced>>>Network>>>Settings>>> Now select Auto detect Proxy settings for this network and then press ok. Now close this window and open Firefox again.

I hope you will not get the error again.

Service pack 3 is in and I did a chkdsk and the cmd.exe is not showing up on re start now. I still have to uninstall avg and put in MSE. This morning right off the bat it said server not found, each time I tried to get on. Then I shut the whole thing down and it worked about 9 minutes before it did it again. I have to go to work, so when I come home later I will see. Each time I did the auto detect proxy. I am not a computer person, so I don't understand that, but I did it. Thank you.

When you install SP3, on reboot, two cmd.exe (Command Prompt) windows open to do some late SP3 processing. Not sure what the impact is if those cmd.exe windows don't work as I've never had to deal with that.

SP3 is installed and so far today my sister said the computer is working without freezing or having to restart. When I uninstall AVG and install MSE, do I need to set anything on MSE or just install it? Also if I have MSE and malwarebytes is that enough security as I uninstalled the spywareblaster. Thank you.

No setup required.

All I use is MSE and Malwarebytes. Been doing this for 2-3 years now.
