Hi,

Thanks for the update. I asked earlier but don't see where I got an answer.

1. Does the internet issue happen in ALL browsers of just one, some of them?

A question about XP SP3. The only thing I can find on the issue of SP3 not being in the Add/Remove Programs but still showing in System information might be because there are still traces of the service pack left behind and this can also be a result of using a third party tool which might not have uninstalled the service pack completely or successfully.

2. How did you uninstall the Service Pack?

it does it on IE and Firefox.

I can't remember if I used Add/Remove or Revo uninstaller to remove SP3.

If you used Revo to uninstall SP3 there is a good chance that some things remain unless you used the Advanced Mode and cleaned everything out of the Registry. And even then, depending on who you listen to, there are changes that SP3 makes to the Registry and system settings that uninstalling can't remove.
The only bullet that I have left for that is to see if the service pack uninstall file is there and see if that will completely uninstall it. If it does the job and the SP3 info is removed from the system info then I want you to download the stand alone SP3 installation file then close the browser, disable AVG and then install SP3.

Step-1.

Uninstall SP3

  • Click Start, click Run, the Run dialogue box will open.
  • Type, or copy and paste c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  • When the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP3.
if the Removal Wizard does not start or you get an error message saying that the file could not be found then my last bullet was a blank.
If the Removal Wizard runs and completes, check the System Info to make sure that SP3 does not show up. If it is gone:

Step-2.

Download XP SP3

  • Click here to go to the SP3 download page.
  • Select your language and click the Download button.
  • On the next page click the radio button beside Proceed with this download and click the Next button.
  • On the next page don't click any of the boxes, just click the No thanks and continue button.
  • The WindowsXP_KB936929_SP3-x86-ENU.exe download window will open.
  • Click Save File and save it to the desktop.
  • Close the browser and all open windows.
Step-3.

How to disable AVG's Resident Shield.

  • Right click the AVG icon and click Open.
  • In the Overview panel click on Resident Shield > Uncheck the Resident Shield Active box > Save Changes.
How to disable the AVG8 Security Toolbar

Internet Explorer - use the mouse right-click on the toolbar and check-off the AVGTOOLBAR option in the list.
Mozilla Firefox - In the upper left corner of the browser, click the down arrow beside Fiefox. If you are using Menu Bar, click Tools). Then click Add-ons. Find the AVG Toolbar here and click on the Disable button.

Step-4.

Double click the WindowsXP_KB936929_SP3-x86-ENU.exe file on the desktop to start the SP3 installation.
NOTE: The installation may reboot the system several times or ask you to reboot it so be aware of that.

Step-5.

Let me know if this was successful and if was, did the internet problem get resolved.

Sorry, that was my last bullet for the SP3 problem. I have a few more things that we can try on the internet problem. When we are done here and have cleaned up the tools we've used you can go back to the Windows XP forum and continue that topic. The system techs will likely have a few more things that they can try.

Have we tried starting FF and IE in safe mode to see if an add-on could be causing the internet problem?
Are there any other remaining issues?

When the internet drops out how long does it take for the internet to come back? Have you changed internet service providers recently?

Let's see if there are any device conflicts.

  • Click the Start button and right-click on My Computer and click Properties. The System Properties window will open
  • In the System Properties window click the Hardware tab.
  • In the Hardware tab click the Device Manager button. The Device Manager window will open.
  • Look for any Red Xs or Yellow question marks or exclamation points.
  • If you see any, take a screen shot of the Device Manager window and post it.

If you don't see any there let's check for hidden devices.
  • At the top of the Device Manager window click View in the menu bar and click show hidden devices.
  • If any Red Xs or Yellow question makes or exclamation show now, that a screen shot and post it.
  • If there still aren't any warning marks, click View again and click Show hidden devices again to remove the check mark by it.
  • Close the Device Manager.

1. Answer my questions
2. Let me know what you found in Device Manager

Have not changed internet service. It will stay connected anywhere from 5 or less minutes to 15 minutes. I have to restart in order for it to work again. My two laptops work fine, so I don't think it's the internet.

Nothing shows in the Device Manager.

So this is a desktop? Can you try connecting to the internet with a Ethernet cable instead of using the wireless connection and see if the problem is still there.

yes this is a desktop. I have a laptop that is okay. My sister has a laptop and desktop that work. I would have to get an ethernet cable and it would have to be long enough to run down the hall as my desktop is in the bedroom and the router in the living room.

OK. What we are trying to do is see if the USB wireless adapter is faulty. In your last post you said that your sister has a desktop. Is it's wireless connector a USB connector like yours or is it a wireless adapter card? If it is a USB wireless adapter like yours you could try unplugging it from her desktop and replacing yours with hers and then see if you can connect to the internet. If you can, your USB wireless adapter is the problem. If the USB adapter is the problem, the Techs here recommend that you replace the USB adapter with a PCI/PCI-E wireless card (assuming you have room in the desktop case.)

She is wireless without that USB adapter. The adapter on mine and she also use to have one on her previous desktop, is that the one that we got from Time Warner that plugs into the back of our computer? If it is she may still have hers and I can see if that makes a difference. I still need to figure out about the remnants of SP3 as that has always caused internet connection problems for me.

I switched USB adapters using the one that was my sisters and it didn't help.

OK so now we need to see of you can connect using your Ethernet card. You can take your desktop closer to the DSL modem and then disconnect the the Ethernet cable from the router and connect it directly to the Ethernet card in the computer. Then see if you can connect to the internet and stay on.

I still need to figure out about the remnants of SP3 as that has always caused internet connection problems for me.

Well I've already done everything I can think of. You may be down to reinstalling Windows to solve that problem but first we want to find out if the internet problem can be resolved. If it can't it may be related to the corrupted uninstall of SP3 and you will end up having to reinstall Windows anyway.
