DVD Rom Won't Recognize DVDS but does CDS

I'm running XP Home edition and, until recently, had a Samsung DVD ROM (SD-616F) along with a cd writer. The CD writer went out completely and the DVD wouldn't recognize DVDs (but it would recognize cds). I pulled the CD writer and replaced it with a Toshiba CD/DVDW (SD-R5372). Immediately after the switch the problem seemed to be solved and the samsung once again recognized DVDs. Until a few days ago. Now its back to the same problem. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I do not have a problem with the Toshiba. It works just fine. If anyone can solve this problem, I'd really appreciate it. It's driving me nuts.
