Hello,

I will get a Windows 8 Phone soon, but do I need a AV for it? Is that free? What one can I use then?

An earlier post (which sounded particularly spammy) recommended AVG Family Safety as an antivirus for Windows Phone.

Just to clarify: AVG Family Safety is a web browser that blocks malicious and phishing sites. It also has the option to block sites in certain content categories, like Pornography and Violence.

There is no anti virus app for Windows Phone 8 because there has been no reported malware developed for Windows Phone 8. As Windows Phone grows in popularity, we may start to see malware focused at the OS, but I'd imagine that if malware were ever a threat to Windows Phone users, Microsoft would release or bake in a version of their excellent Windows Defender. So to answer your question, no you don't need an AV for a Windows Phone.
