Finished the Avira scan, which resulted in another 5 virus files, all of which were removed. Looked like various Java and PDF related extensions on the files. Rebooted computer after this scan, but still run into ransomware block.

Is there any way to clear the Temporary Internet Files and Java cache as a whole without being logged on to the system, locally, from Windows XP? Sure I see the directories where I think they point, but am I safe to remove everything in the directory?

Another possible thought... Just biting the bullet, nuking the whole thing and reformatting. But, if I were to do that, how likely is it that I'd be safe connecting a larger USB drive and copying files such as photos and music/mp3s? Luckily, I'm fairly current on my back ups, so most things I'd want to keep are already saved, but there are a few recently updated files or just added photos, etc, that I need to snag if possible. I know that nothing is guaranteed to be safe, 100%, but do you think the risk is worth connecting another external drive? Or is the virus(s) likely to just hitch a ride from the bad system to another system. Then again, I guess I have already been doing that by downloading files on laptop, and transferring them to the sick PC on another, smaller USB thumb drive.

the way this is going that would be the best rout as I don't see it and neither does anything else.


I would reload windows and when I have all the security in place I would then scan the larger drive before I moved anything

So go ahead, copy the files from the sick PC, reformat the sick PC, install and update anti-virus and other utilities, perform full scans, then if safe move from the USB drive to the newly formatted PC, right? Unfortunately I have to back up files on the sick PC prior to reformatting it.

Wish I could come up with an easy and cheap method to create and use computer images for quicker restores as needed.

that is as good as you can get - but any virus will have a hard time hiding on the external drive - just make sure the autorun is shut off
