Hi all,

I posted a follow-up question to the topic raised 2 years ago, however haven't received any feedback so am starting a new chain..

Laptop was switched off for 2 weeks and when I fired it up again it started freezing every 10-15 minutes requiring hard reboot. During first several restarts (4-5) it was checking C drive for the consistency of the files and deleting couple of files (based on the name associated to the internet radio I used to listen).
It now continues to freeze every 10-15 minutes but restarts normally (no more C drive checks).

Things I attempted to remedy the situation:
1. switched to another browser (chrome from IE)
2. frantically deleting any software not actively in use
3. deleting files not in use
4. Ran autoruns and deleted any which had 'file not found' message

can anyone help please?

I have a sony vaio laptop (original Vista upgraded to Windows 7 using Sony supplied CD-s for W7 and drives).

Can you attach your autorun.txt log so I can check it please?
Have you checked your hard drive for possible issues?
How about running memtest85 to check the memory?
If the freezing is that bad there should be a even logged for it so I would like to see thta if possible.

" Look for the ones that correspond to the times that your issue occurred.
" If any are found please double click and expand the error. This will open and give you more information on the error.
" Please include that in your next reply.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (chose "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, try the Hitachi DFT CD Image version of the software

Click on the file you just downloaded and run it.
Put a tick in Accept then click on Next
Put a tick in the Don't create a start menu folder then click Next
Put a tick in Create a Desktop Icon then click on Install and make sure there is a tick in Launch Whocrashed before clicking Finish
Click Analyze
It will want to download the Debugger and install it Say Yes
WhoCrashed will create report but you have to scroll down to see it

attached. The debugger didn't run because 'no valid crash dumps' were found.

2. My HD is TOSHIBA MK4058GSX
on the link provided none of the diagnostic tools are for Windows 7 for Toshiba - which one do I run?

3. Memtest86
I'm trying to run - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip), and it asks me to first burn it on a CD, however when attempting to do so it gives me this error: the selected disk image is not valid.

what am I doing wrong?

did we hit a wall??

Sorry correction to HD diagnostics

I ran WinDFT from this website http://www.hgst.com/...downloads/#DFT. When running there is no HD in a panel to scan it. How to I 'import' HD into DFT? I also noticed the name of the file says 32, is it for 32bit systems?
Or can you please tell me how to run an iso file for the Dft from this site? http://www.tacktech....tid=287#hitachi

p.s. my computer just ran a registry, disk defrags and also clean-ups.
p.p.s. I also tried checking updates for HD driver but nothing was found.

You need to have a iso or image burn software like in the instructions with Imgburn. If you can't use the one for the drive you can use Hitachi or Seagate in the ISO file to run the diagnostics. If done right the system has to boot to the cdrom drive so that the diagnostics runs without windows.
Since WhoCrashed found no crash dumps then it isn't a driver issue most likely.
Memtest86 has to be burned to a cd using the suggested burning software to work right. If you attempt to burn either memtest or the hd diagnostic program as a bootable disk it won't work.

interestingly when computer hangs the keyboard and mouse is responsive, but everything else freezes...

Look at post 4 in the middle where the hd diagnostic instructions are. The instructions for imgburn are included. I didn't post the memtest86 instructions but they are now below for you. Imgburn instructions are also located in the below steps 4 through 7




A If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...


1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip). If you prefer to use the USB version then use this link USB KEY
2. Unzip downloaded /memtest86+-4.20.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find /memtest86+-4.20.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:



8. Locate memtest86+-4.20.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:



10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.


The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:




It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.



The following image is the test results area:



The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

first re HD test

the Iso file for Hitachi on this link http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287 is for 32bit system as I mentioned. Even though I used imageburn software and succesfully burnt it to a CD the application won't run giving a system incompatibility error.
the DFT here http://www.hgst.com/...downloads/#DFT is not an iso file. I started running it as mentioned earlier but can not scan HD as it does not show up in the panel.

will now figure out how Memorytest works...

Did you get the CD DOS ISO version? If you got the Windows version then that is why it says 32 bit on it. It is better to have the DOS ISO version because the system will boot to the cdrom when you reboot and run without windows interfering.

and re Memtest

successfully burnt to a CD but how am I supposed to 'boot from a CD'? The CD has 2 files: BOOT and Memtest. Neither of which 'runs'. Memtest gives an error 'selected image file is not valid' and BOOT 'the file is invalid to use as the following: security catalog'.

Sorry but is it not easier to do a full system recovery to an earlier date or something in those lines?

I am getting super frustrated and have a feeling am going in circles with no end in sight ((

You have to reboot the system with the cd in and make sure the system boots to the cdrom and not the hd. You should be able to either chose the boot device or set the boot sequence in the bios for the cdrom to be the first boot device.
