need some help with a computer that my mom uses, I have done all the scans and checks required before posting, and still we experience frequent lockups doing normal things.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Johonn

Hi Johonn and welcome to GTG.

:tazz: That icon is for all users who become a member here. If you are a regular poster here that newbie status will change. It's not saying that you are a newbie at all ;)

OK, I will ask you to disable some programs (see below) to see if it speed things up. I will also give you the fix for the log.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

MyPoints

Messenger Plus - this program contains a 'sponsor' program. If you installed this 'sponsor' program, please uninstall Messenger Plus and reinstall it back but without the sponsor.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Yeah, after i posted, i was browsing some more of this forum and figured out how that icon works... :tazz:

Anyway, heres the new hijack this log. I was unable to uninstall MyPoints, as that specific name wasnt in Add/Remove Programs, however, MyPointsPointAlert was there, and would not uninstall.

thanks again for your help!

You can't uninstall it in Safe Mode or Normal Mode? Try again. Or see if there is an uninstaller in the C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\ folder.

Check and fix these:

O8 - Extra context menu item: MyPoints - file://C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\System\Temp\mypoints_script0.htm
O9 - Extra button: Point Alert - {16BF42FD-CA0A-4f48-819D-B0343254DD67} - file://C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\System\Temp\mypoints_script0.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

Delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\

Restart and post back a new log.

Hi. I tried again to uninstall MyPointsPointAlert, this time in normal mode, and got the error message: Could not execute Main: The System cannot find the file specified.
I did delete the MyPointsPointAlert folder last time, and it is not there anymore.
hope im not doing something wrong here?

Nope, I was going to ask you to do the same thing and just delete the folder if it still gave you problems.

Check and fix these also (probably nothing bad, but...):

No need for a new log.

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Well, I do still have problems with that computer locking up, but im pretty much sure now that its not malware related. I still get frequent lockups when browsing the web, especially when browsing a flash based site. Actually, it locked up twice when I was composing this reply, couldn't bring up task manager or anything, and I am having to use my computer instead. I know that part of the problem could be low ram, since there is only 384Mb on it (128+256), but still, it shouldn't lock up this easily. I suppose this is out of your field now... but thanks for helping me clear up the log, anyway! that was a great help!
