I wish you had taken the shot in full screen because I would been able to see the partition information, used space/free space etc.

Can you do another please.

Was your screen shot in post #3 taken from another machine?

It looks like someone has deleted the recover partition, did you ever make any back to factory recovery disks mate?

Are you saying that you removed the original hard drive and replaced it with a 40GB and then installed Windows 8?

If you have then you'll be going nowhere fast with such a small drive.

However that is another matter and to my mind the Recovery partition is no longer there on the original 300GB hard drive and the 15GB partition will be for the Dell System Tools.

Someone has been messing around with these partitions though and while doing so probably deleted the recovery partition.

You would have to delete it using a diskpart command which would then leave it as unallocated space.

Please read this.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415

Equally you could do a brand new install of Windows 7 deleting all partitions.

It's up to you mate.

The 15Gb is part of the 300GB drive even though you can't access it.

You will still only have a 300GB hard drive after deleting it.

Delete the partition using disk part which will leave it as unallocated and then format it, once that is done then you can merge the partitions using the tools in Windows 7.

Consider this video.
