Hello,

This is a system I built myself in 2007 and apart from replacing the CMOS battery in July 2010 it has had no other problems.

4 weeks ago the computer starting booting up into bios with the Chassis intrusion warning message (there was no intrusion) and the cmos clock one hour behind. Eventually it got so bad that the usb mouse would no longer work so last Thursday I put a new battery in.

Today when I started up the computer its doing the same thing again. I can't believe it has got through another battery in a week!.

What's going wrong here?

Hello Wolf_3d

Can I just confirm that the symptoms are exactly the same please.

I am not suspecting a dead CMOS battery as the cause because the RTC (real time clock) would not be exactly an hour behind if the battery was dead unless by a sheer coincidence and maybe once but no more than that.

Did you check what date was showing in the BIOS when this happened and if so was it correct.
Have you had any checksum error messages displayed on the screen.

Hello Wolf_3d

It was always an hour behind every time.

I did. The date was always correct every time.

Have you had any checksum error messages displayed on the screen.

Yes just the one that I can recall. It went along the lines of "Checksum error - Your CPU Settings Have Changed!".

But when I went in to check the CPU settings, I couldn't tell what had changed. Everything appears to be correct as they are and I haven't had any problems with the CPU.

When I started the computer up today it didn't boot up into bios this time. It just went straight to login.

Thanks for the update Wolf_3d

The fact that the date is correct in the BIOS rules out the CMOS battery having failed, if the battery had expired the time would have reverted back to 00.00 and the date would have reverted back to the date that the MB was tested back at the factory when the BIOS chip was initialized.

I am not aware of any hardware or software issue that could cause such behavior so as a precautionary measure before we continue here can I ask you to refer to the GTG malware self help guide and if necessary seek the assistance of the experts on those forums if you have a malware issue that you cannot resolve yourself, we will be here should you need to return to this topic.

Please read the 'Start Here' topic found here. With these self-help tools you have a high chance of fixing the problems on your own. If you are still having problems after following Step 3 of the guide, continue with Step 4 and 5 and post in the Malware Forum. If you are unable to run any programs, Please create a topic stating what you have tried so far and that you are unable to run any programs. Also, Please do NOT post the logs in this thread.

If you are still having issues after the malware expert gives you a clean bill of health, Please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Additional guidance;

1: Do not create a topic on the malware forum unless you have a malware issue that you cannot resolve yourself.
2: If you do need to start a topic there provide a link to this thread so that steps that have already been taken can be checked.
3: As the Malware Techs are extremely busy you may not receive an instant reply, if you have waited for three days then post in the Waiting Room http://www.geekstogo...e-waiting-room/ be sure to identify the issue as malware related and provide a link to your malware topic.

I should have said that I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as my main OS on this machine. I haven't used the forums in a while and I forgot to change it from XP to Ubuntu.

I wouldn't have thought it would have been malware. The chances of getting malware that can do that is slim to say the least.

No worries re the OS that you are using

I am neither qualified or permitted to offer any form of malware guidance but what I can do is provide information to substantiate what I have suggested earlier in that you may need the assistance of the malware staff to resolve the issue http://www.makeuseof...oses-time-date/

Please note that I am not suggesting that you use any other product or service or follow any guidance at the above link.
