Hi there Hellomut, I think we are getting close to the problem. Vista service pack 2 is installed on your machine and the driver file for Netbt is also on your computer. For some reason they are not being recognised.

I will prepare a post where I can uninstall the Service Pack another way. This I feel is the reason for the errors you are getting.

My instructor may not be online this evening, so it will be ready for you tomorrow afternoon. Thanks again for your patience this has been a funny old fix and a great learning experience :)

Hi Hellomut :)

So there is our issue a Service Pack problem. The malicious removal tool is fine to install. The first step deals with the updates

Lets fix that and this should solve the NetBT issue.

1. ENSURE AUTOMATIC UPDATES ARE ENABLED
All security updates released by Microsoft must be Automatically Installed.
  • Click Start and in the search box type windows update and press ENTER.
  • Click Change Settings and make sure the Install updates automatically (recommended) option is selected, if not select it and click O.K to save settings.
  • Now click Check for updates and install the important updates only You may be asked to reboot once complete, please do so.
  • Repeat the Check for updates process and also install any important updates found. Repeat this until nothing is found. Then move on to step 2.

2. Run CheckSUR
  • Use this link to install CheckSUR
  • Run the program and click O.K if prompted to install a Hotfix.
  • This will take some time to run. Once complete click Finish

  • Now I need the log
  • Click Start and in the search bar type cmd in the list that appears right click CMD and Run as Administrator
  • At the prompt copy and paste the following: copy %windir%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log %userprofile%\Desktop\checksur1.txt and press Enter it should report 1 File copied
  • Same again for the following command at the next prompt: copy %windir%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log %userprofile%\Desktop\checksur2.txt press Enter it should report 1 File copied
  • Check your Desktop and paste both logs to me: Checksur1 and Checksur2

Things I want to see in your next post.
  • Checksur1
  • Checksur2

Hi Hellomut thanks for your patience. We will try uninstalling SP2 again in a slightly different way as this is the easiest and best method to use. If no luck with that then we will go ahead and download the Service Pack ourselves :)

1. Uninstall Service Pack 2

  • Click Start and in the search bar type: Installed Updates and press Enter
  • A list will appear but it will take a moment for the complete list to load, watch the Green Progress Bar at the top of the Window.
  • Under Microsoft Windows scroll down the list to find Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465)
  • Right Click this entry and Uninstall

2. Windows Update

  • Click Start and in the search bar type Windows Update and press Enter
  • Select Check For Updates once complete click the link for updates found and check if Service Pack 2 is available and install. Then Reboot.
  • If not present install the updates found and repeat this process until Service Pack is found and installed

If the above is succesfull Do Not continue with steps 3 and 4 below, just report back to me.

3. Download Service Pack 2 and Create hellomut Folder

  • Use this link to download Vista Service Pack 2 click Download and Save to Desktop
  • Right Click the Icon on your desktop and select Cut Click Start then Computer double click Local Disk (C:) Right click an empty space and select Paste
  • Right click an empty space once more and select New then Folder name this new folder hellomut
  • O.K so you should have Windows6.0-KB948465-X86 and the hellomut folder in Local Disk C:
  • Close Window

4. Open CMD
  • Click Start and in the search bar type cmd in the list that appears right click CMD and Run as Administrator
  • At the prompt copy and paste the following: c:\Windows6.0-KB948465-X86.exe /x: c:\hellomut and press Enter
  • Once the extraction is complete: At the prompt copy and paste the following: Expand -f:* c:\hellomut\Windows6.0-KB948465-X86.cab c:\hellomut and press Enter
  • Files will now be expanded to the hellomut folder. When complete CMD will state Expanding Files Complete....4995 Files Total close CMD

Let me know if you have any problems with the above instructions.

As you have mentioned e-mails, I'm not sure if your looking at the right screens.

When you click Start and type Installed Updates then press Enter:

You should see a screen like this:

Under the title, Microsoft Windows should be the service pack. On that same screen there is a search windows updates bar:

If you type service in that bar as I have in the picture. The service pack should appear. If this does not work or nothing appears then get back to me before doing anything else

Hi there still no joy, but I think I have found the screen / page you wanted me to find. I went into control panel then programs and features, then there is a list on the left hand side and one of them says installed updates I clicked on that and then I get the page that downloads, in ther are all the programs but no window service packs one or two there is one for office 2010.
