most people with older PC'S have OEM versions of XP but you vcan also have a system built XP (pre-installed)PC (from a vendor) & 1)no matter how valid your XP system is &; 2) no matter if you have XP Product Key on the side of your PC & you input this:-
A) - Microsoft Support will not let you;
B)register/validate/re-activate your Genuine Windows Activation Product Key(s);
C) THEY JUST WANT USERS TO PAY/PURCHASE their new operating system Windows 8 &;
D) the above will happen when the battery on the PC's electronics dies & you change it!!! &;
E) the above will happen even when you follow the Microsoft process of backing up/reinstalling the files under Windows directory!!!
F) the above will happen even when you use a genuine Windows XP from a friend to try to reinstall XP &
1)different version of XP (Professional/Home Editions) from that which was originally installed on your PC
2) but also if you use the later version of XP, when an older version was first installed on PC &
3) you cannot use an OEM version of XP (Professional/Home Editions) on a Retail installed version of XP PC & vice versa. Vice being the MicroSoft relevent word here, as they(MS) are determined not to let Users continue to use Windows XP.

does anyone know any other way to backup/reinstall/reactivate Windows XP?
