Okay, got the Fix It program to run but it says it can't install the Powershell so can't complete the run. I'm going to try restarting the computer and trying again.

Windows Updates are really hard to fix. Please try running this fixit.

Try SP1 again. If that doesn't work, please upload: C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

We may be looking at a repair install. Do you have your Vista install CD?

I bought my computer from HP and it came with Windows Vista installed already so I don't have an install CD, unfortunately. At least, not that I know of. I don't think I was provided one when I bought the computer.

Thanks for waiting- unfortunately the update won't work even with all the fixes. I have to admit I'm rather tired and frustrated. Thanks for still continuing to help me.

I found a WindowsUpdate file but it is near 2mb so I'm uploading as an attachment.

I think my computer has a partition that is the Recovery files - but I lost a lot of the paperwork for the computer as I moved several times since the time I bought it. So, I'm worried I might not have the product key or whatever might be needed for recovery. Is there any risk with running a repair install? Will I lose all my settings and files in the process? I know it probably isn't ideal, but is there anyway to get rid of the Windows Security virus without having to install the Windows service pack?

I know this is very frustrating. Windows update problems can be very tricky.

If we use the recovery partition, all of your files and programs will be deleted and the computer will be like it came from the factory. We don't want to do that except as a very last resort.

Actually your computer looks clean to me now. I believe the security center warning is legitimate. McAfee was broken and needed to be reinstalled, so that was why it was giving the warning. I think the warning will go away when we reinstall McAfee.

What we are trying to do now is get your computer updated to SP2. Your computer is very outdated which makes it really vulnerable to continued infection, so that is why updating is so important. In fact, Vista without SP2 is no longer supported by Microsoft.
