Ok Thanks lets try another fix...
  • Download the script FixWU.cmd to the Desktop
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode
  • Right click on the file FixWU.cmd you have on the Desktop and select Run as Administrator
  • When the script ends it will show a message to Restart the Computer. Please Restart normally
  • After restart you should have a log on the Desktop called FixWU.log open the file and copy its content to your post

hi. so getting home from work today i powered on my laptop and here is what i found:
1. first of all, when booting up, i got all sorts of messages regarding updates and stuff that were being installed.
2. when windows came up the same pop up appeared saying that windows can't check for updates automatically.
3. i went to the windows update window and saw that windows has in fact installed updates. the latest update was installed today, at the hour i powered on my computer.

that is the current status, looks like some progress to me
let me know how to proceed.

Hi,

Good, sounds like we did some progress. :)
Can you open the Windows Update applet from Control Panel and click Check for Updates?
Do it several times until you get Windows is up to date or some error...

Note: Due to all that we tried its possible that windows will reinstall some updates already installed.

went to windows update panel and clicked check for updates.
it found 5 critical updates and 5 optional. i selected all 5 critical and 4 of the optional ones. didn't care for the bing desktop something....

clicked install.

first it updgraded my microsoft security essentials and the windows firewall. after that, it installed the other updates.

when all was done, i got the "successful updates" message and was prompted to restart.

after restart i got a message saying the updates were successfully installed.

up to this point all is good. however, i am still getting that popup saying that windows can't automatically check for updates and that i should check.

Hi,

Windows updates seems working let's see if we can fix that warning also...
  • Locate the folder SoftwareDistribution inside C:\Windows
  • right click SoftwareDistribution and choose Properties
  • check the box Hidden from the Attributes section
  • click Apply
  • on the following window, select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files
    Posted Image
  • unckeck the box Hidden from the Attributes section
  • click Apply
  • click OK
  • Restart and check if the message is gone

  • unckeck the box Hidden from the Attributes section
  • click Apply

at this point it once again gave me the two options of either applying only to the folder or to the folder, subfolders and files.
i did as before - selected Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files

i then restarted.

unfortunately, the popup still appears

Hi,

You did everything ok thanks. Unfortunately we need to continue digging this problem...

I have read all the thread again and we didn't check if there is any problem with the critical windows services many of them related to Windows Update, lets do it:

Download Farbar Service Scanner
- Run FSS
- Check all the options
- click Scan
- Post the generated log in your reply.

Also I want to check if windows is recording errors.
Please download Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso (VEW) and save the file on the Desktop
- Execute the VEW tool and check the following options:
  • Select Log to Query
    * Application
    * System
  • Select type to list
    * Error
    * Information
  • Number or date of events: 20
- Press Run
- post the generated log

hi sleepy. thanks for being persistent with this :)
the VEW log is pretty long, so rather than posting it all, i've attached both logs.

FSS LOG
Attached File  130721_1900_FSS.txt   2.44KB   196 downloads

VEW LOG
Attached File  130721_1920_VEW.txt   23.27KB   234 downloads

Hi,

FSS shows that the services are ok.

One of the errors on Event Viewer is well know and Microsoft have a fix for it on this page

Please download and install the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool it seems that the update failed to install!
It doesn't hurt running it again in case its already installed.

Unfortunately the Event Viewer didn't give any other hint related to the warning you get!

I would like you to try this:
  • Disable Windows Updates and all the check box's like this:
    Posted Image
  • Click OK, accept any warnings and Restart
  • After restart re-enable Windows Updates...
    Posted Image
  • Click OK and Restart again

Edit: Posted before I read your post #59
