Ok, you also shutdown the system normally and let windows install the updates?

I'm consulting a friend that have more experience on this kind of problems let me see if he have some more ideas.

In the meantime let's run a Disk Check...

• open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
• type the command:
  

  chkdsk /f /x C:

  When it ask if you want to do a scan on next restart answer Yes
• restart the computer

Next,

• download ListChkdskResult
• execute the file and accept all the windows prompts to authorize the program to run
• Notepad will open with a report showing the chkdsk result
• copy & paste the log to your reply

Hi,

Good Chkdsk fixed some minor things...

Lets do some Clean Up

• download TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer and save the file on the Desktop
• right click the TFC icon and choose Run as Administrator
• click Start

Note: When TFC runs it can shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, but they will return on reboot

hi sleepy, i shutdown normally every night, so this doesn't seem to solve the issue or install any updates.

i have now tried to normally shutdown once again, after having gone through those maintenance steps. upon starting up again, i did not receive the message saying that windows cannot update automatically. however. this is not unusual. i don't always get that message when starting the computer.
in the update panel, the latest update is still indicated to be june 12. when i click "check for updates" i get the message "restart your computer to install important updates. windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them...".
so it seems i'm still having the same issue

Please go to C:\Windows and find folder named "Software Distribution". Inside should be file named "Reportingevents.txt". Please, attach it to your next post. If it's too big, then zip it and attach.

did both these steps. then restarted the computer and after that i went to the windows update panel and clicked "check for updates".

first of all this pop up appeared once again:


then i got the same message about having to restart in order to install updates, as mentioned in the original post of this thread.

so sadly, i don't think this did trick : /

Please do.
First try to do it from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, then follow pasted instructions.
Due to my research problem exists especially when MSE is on board, so i suspect him.

If it won't do, we'll be trying another ways. I still have some more ideas

I do not want to overload you with instructions try the Naathim suggestion and please report back to us.
After removing Microsoft Security Essentials just test the updates and then reinstall the AV right away because isn't good idea to be without one AV installed.

hi guys. uninstalled MSE via control panel. uninstall was successful.
restarted computer.
clicked on check for updates.
the update checker seemed to run for about a whole minute then went straight to the message saying that computer needs to be restarted to install updates (same message as i would get previously).
bleakly restarted my computer.
after restart checked the microsoft update panel. no change. last update remains june 12, 2013.
i've re-installed MSE.

OK. This one wil be a long shot, but let's give it a try.

Print out these instructions, as you'll have to make things from safeboot mode.

Reboot to Safemode.

Run Command Prompt as an administrator.

Now you'll have to use many commands in command prompt. One line below in codebox is one command.
EACH ONE OF THEM MUST BE CONFIRMED BY PRESSING ENTER !

net stop bits

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptsvc

del \Programdata\Microsoft\network\downloader\qmgr*.dat

cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution

ren DataStore DataStore.OLD

ren Download Download.OLD

cd %systemroot%\system32

ren catroot2 catroot2.OLD

Now do the some with the commands below:
Be careful with typing, I know it's not easy as they are very long and complicated, but I'm sure you can handle it
