I agreed to clean the computer belonging to our pastor's wife and wanted to give her free virus/malware/spyware protection ... as well as physically clean the inside of the machine.

She uses dial-up, so I brought her machine to my house to hook it up to my 'high-speed' connection and download the stuff I need along with the updates. I can't connect to my LAN.

Here's what I know.

Her Machine

eMachine - WinXP - Home Edition - SP3
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz 256MB RAM

what I SEE ...
on the back there is her normal connection for dial-up (and I know that works)
there is also a slot for the 'network' adapter for me to plug in the ethernet cable
(when I look inside, I see that the network adapter is attached to the motherboard)

However, I can not set her up on my network, nor can I see the network adapter in the Device Manager

How do I find out or fix it so I can see the network adapter to make this work for her? I know that I can install the programs on her machine, but I won't be able to update them for her and depending on how large they are, she may not be able to update them at her house.

Thanks for the help in advance ... It's always a blessing coming here for support.

Hi,

If the network adapter is on-board and not an add-on card check the BIOS because normally you can disable the on-board network device, with the device disabled windows will not show nothing about the device.

Ok, lets take a look you will probably need to use an USB flash drive to transfer the file...

Download MiniToolBox
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log

Hi,

The log show that the computer can access the internet, got an IP Address and can ping google and yahoo web sites.

Maybe its a problem with the browser, it seems you use Internet Explorer 7 try resetting the program to its defaults by using the Microsoft FixIt available here.

You could also try this tool.
http://www.majorgeek...net_repair.html

Also try creating a new account and see if you can connect from it.

Not sure what version of IE is on her machine, but ...

I installed Opera and it works, but has crashed once or twice

I installed Chrome and it works, but has crashed once or twice.

I was unable to install Firefox

I am trying to get IE8 to install, but it appeared to install once, but then crashed so
I tried installing it again ... and it seems to be working now.

I have been able to install and update AVG Free for her and install CCleaner ... going to try Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, but will wait to see
if you guys can think of any other programs other than Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.

Those are nice programs to have on a machine you could also perform an online scan as well.
http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Her Machine

eMachine - WinXP - Home Edition - SP3
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz 256MB RAM

Hi,

Just revised what you posted if the machine have only 256MB of RAM its very low and for sure one of the reasons that windows run very slow.
About Internet Explorer you can uninstall it's version 7 and you should find it on the Add/Remove list then try to install IE 8.

Those are nice programs to have on a machine you could also perform an online scan as well.

I knew you weren't asking me to post the eset scan ... I forgot about using that 'tool' ... but with my pastor's wife's connection on dial-up, I'm doubting she would be able to use that anyway ...

I DID uninstall the Primary IDE drivers and rebooted and it seems to run a bit faster, but I'm trying to get hold of my brother-in-law (who runs a computer 'salvage' business) if he can get me a few more/better RAM sticks for her machine.

Thanks for your help!

When I finally got IE8 to install part of it's installation was to delete the existing IE ... so I'm good on that now I believe, as IE8 is the only one in the list.

Thanks for your help!
