Can't change memory settings in BIOS

Hi guys,
my comp specs are Asus M2N-MX SE PLUS motherboard,AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+, Win7 ultimate 64bit, 2gb RAM(800Hz).I wanted to upgrade my ram to 4gb and so I went for the same ram(as mentioned earlier). However I faced some difficulty since the computer screen didn't light after I inserted the 2nd ram and pressed the power button. The fans and other things were working fine, the green light on the motherboard was on, the only other fault indicator was that the power light kept flashing on and off at regular intervals. I tried solving this problem using the methods specified here:

but none of them worked. Then it was suggested that I try to manually configure my BIOS to the specific time and latency of these ram. I tried to figure out the latency through CPUZ. However I can't seem to locate anywhere in the BIOS to do any changes.


Any kind of help is welcome.

Most BIOS programs do not offer the options you are looking for.

Have you verified that the computer will still boot with just the old RAM? Will it boot with just the old RAM in the second slot? Will it boot with just the new RAM in either slot? Are you sure you have the exact same RAM?

No it won't boot with any ram in the 2nd slot.

The ram is completely same(same model no. and everything).
Also there were some forums that suggested that you can get these settings even without these settings in BIOS using SPD Tool:

If it won't boot with just the old RAM in Slot 2 the contacts might be dirty. Try inserting and removing the RAM a few times.

You might also reset the BIOS to default.

Dude check out the link in my first post. I have already done that a couple of times. The thought of changing the BIOS settings only came into my mind since there were a lot of similarities in my case and the cases in that link.

Sorry dud, don't have time to wade through your link.

Your BIOS Setup has an option to enable/disable clock to all DIMMs. Under Advanced/Memory Configuration. Make sure it is Enabled.

Do you have the latest BIOS? 0602? http://www.asus.com/...ort_Download_17 I see there was a fix for some memory issues with 0402.

Alright I enabled it but to no effect. My BIOS is latest. Also tell me first if you're taking the photo as reference since the option enabled/disabled in the photo and my BIOS are quite different.

I got it from the manual that is on the ASUS website. http://www.asus.com/...ort_Download_30
It was probably originally made for the first version of the BIOS so might look a bit different.

There is an option to move a jumper to clear the RTC mentioned in the manual. You might try that. Sounds like it resets everything to default.

It also says in the FAQ:

I recently upgraded my memory modules. After the upgrade, sometimes my system is not stable. It may get BSOD or hang during OS loading. How do I resolve this issue?

The issue may be related to the voltage setting of your memory modules. The standard operating voltages of DDR2 and DDR3 memory modules, as defined by JEDEC, are 1.8V and 1.5V, respectively. However, some of the memory modules require higher operating voltage than JEDEC’s standards. In such case, the memory may sometimes not be able to function properly without enough voltage.

When you encounter instability issue, please first check the operating voltage of your memory modules, and please manually set the memory voltage accordingly in the BIOS.

What I meant to say in my last post was that if you were considering the settings in the photo as default then I would have to change those settings as well. So were you considering those as default settings?

By moving the RTC jumper I basically clear the BIOS. There is one peculiarity that I would like to report though:

When I moved the jumper from 1-2 to 2-3 while the 2 modules were inserted and the power was on, the power button light stopped blinking however there was still nothing on the screen. So what does this mean?

Also this memory is JEDEC compliant. It's operating voltage is 1.8V +/- 0.1 V .

Appear to be the defaults. If you look at the text in the manual they show the default in parens after the name and it matches with what is in the picture.
I would expect it to go to them if you clear the RTC.


I would not be surprised if the MB didn't have a problem with the RAM loading the voltage down. JEDEC or not. Wouldn't hurt to bump it up a notch to see if it did anything.

I did read these instructions and I did do these steps, however these just set the BIOS to defaults and did not solve the problem. That last post was one of the suggestions I found in the link of my first post, so I wanted to discuss the observations since that was the closest I got to solving the problem(as normally the power button light doesn't blink).

What moving the jumper does is short out the power to the CMOS so it's no wonder that the power supply light blinked.

It seems there's been a misunderstanding. What I was trying to say was:
when the jumper was in 1-2 position the power button light was blinking but when I moved the jumper to 2-3 position it stopped blinking.

Also since the battery was still in place shouldn't the CMOS NOT be shorted.

No the battery gets shorted too which is why they tell you to take it out.
