Some techs like the entire speccy list to help pinpoint issues, so if you could edit your last post with the entire list, it would be great! Please do not purchase new parts until a tech is able to review your info. This will allow them to look at what you have and suggest upgrades for you, preventing you from wasting money on parts that will not benefit you and whatnot.

Hey you guys. My 15 yr old didn't tell me until last night but since we installed the new video card, there have been diagonal lines running on the monitor. You have to look close, and they are more easily seen in darker areas, but it's definitely there. Could this be a bad video card? Any ideas?

It could be a flaky card but it could also be a driver issue, a loose or poor video cable connection, the display itself or in some cases outside electrical or wireless interference.

First check I would do is to ensure that the video cable is in good condition (including the pins in the end connections) and that the connections are at least finger tight (and no more) when attached to the display and the video card, second check is to try another screen to see if the issue is still present.

For now only check the above and then provide an update for us please.

Ok, all connections are good. Did a monitor switch and the problem was still there.

What would you check next? Sorry to bug you but I don't want to miss our opportunity to do a return w/ Amazon if need be on that video card, if they do a "has to be within 30 days" thing then I am nearing that. Thanks for the help.

Check the Device Manager to see if there is a yellow ! or red X next to the video card.

Next run dxdiag and check the video card performance there, if you are using Vista, W7 or W8 go to Start, type in dxdiag in the search field and then press Enter, if you are using XP enter dxdiag in the Run field then follow the above.

Do you have any wireless devices near the computer such as a router or cordless phone for example, microwave devices can also cause interference as can remote controlled devices such as ceiling fans etc.

Device Manager looked fine. There is a cordless phone right next to his computer but it's always been there, for as along as he's had the computer. Never saw any diagonal lines before putting in the new video card.

Couple of suggestions before you RMA the card; 1: Turn off or remove the cordless phone. 2: Check for an updated or try an earlier driver 3: Try the computer on a different power outlet.

#'s 1 & 3 done, no change. # 2, driver is updated. What are you thinking it might be? We might be willing to spend a little more to get a better card if we do send this one back. So in that case we'd be back to square one asking which card would you recommend? I guess he wants the most FPS he can get.

# 2, driver is updated

Did you update the driver or do you mean that the driver that was/is being used is the latest.

Try an earlier driver if the latest driver produces the same result.

What are you thinking it might be?

Not sure at present as it could even be a static build up in the GPU slot, try removing the add on video card and then connect the display to the MBs integrated video chip please, are the lines still present.

I meant that the driver was already up to date, sorry. I didn't try an earlier version because I don't know how to do that and am afraid of screwing things up.

Will try the last step (plugging back into integrated video chip asap. Thank You!

Ok no worries

We will wait on the outcome of removing the add on video card and using the MBs integrated video chip, before you do this can you save the new video card drivers to the desktop and then uninstall the drivers for the card so that they do not conflict with the integrated video chip drivers.

Ok, how do I save the drivers to the desktop & then uninstall them? Glad you mentioned that because I would have just unplugged one & reattached the other.

I suggest the manual way so that you can select an earlier version of the driver http://support.amd.c...ages/index.aspx

Save the driver to a folder on the desktop, go to the Device Manager, expand the add on video card entry, uninstall the drivers for it, shutdown the computer and after following the normal safety steps (removing all power cords from the wall sockets etc) remove the add on video card, reassemble the computer connected to the MBs video port and see if the lines are still present.

Hey just to clarify... I went in and had my son to show me "exactly" what is going on because sometimes I can't see the diagonal lines. So he put on minecraft and it's only w/ movement that you can see the lines all over the page. He can see it way better than me. But I definitely saw it. If the screen is left completely still you can't see the lines. It's only as he's scrolling around, turning in circles, any movement at all really, and it's much more noticeable in the darker areas. He says it was NOT like this before the upgrade. So just wanted to add that bit of information, don't know if it changes anything or not but felt like you should know.
