Hi,

Something more to try:

  • Open Action Center by clicking in Start > Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Action Center.
  • Click on Change Action Control settings link on the left panel of the window.
  • Uncheck the Windows Update checkbox under Security messages.
  • Click OK
  • Close the window and Restart the computer.
  • See if this removes the message.
  • To turn it back on, check the same checkbox from step 3.
  • Restart the computer

Hi,

Check the box and restart. Is the first warning back after reboot?

update: this morning i turned on my computer and the "windows couldn't automatically check for updates" popup is back. :(

All that problem seems to be related to the fact that Windows Update didn't work on the pass and now that it's working the Windows Security Center isn't updating the status correctly. Lets force a reset and see the result...

Open the Command Prompt as Administrator and type:
Winmgmt /resetrepository
Wait 10 minutes and then restart the computer.

hi sleepydude.
the latest developments -
yesterday i noticed that when starting up my computer, i continue to get the "windows couldn't check for updates automatically" popup, however i noticed:
when clicking on the link (in the popup) that says Open Action Center - it takes me to the Action Center panel which basically states the same warning.
however when clicking on the link that says "windows couldn't...." message itself - it takes me to the Windows Update panel and there, surprisingly, i see that contrary to how it was before, now it is checking for updates!
so it seems that windows is in fact checking for updates automatically, regardless of the popup and the message in the Action Center.
after a few moments it eventually finishes searching for updates. today was the same. so possibly we've made progress after all.
yesterday and today the update panel searched and found no important available updates. it did find 2 optional updates. i haven't yet installed them.

Hi,

Sorry for let you waiting, I have been discussing this problem with my Instructor...

I would like you to download the script ResetServicesStart.cmd save the file to the Desktop, right click the file and select Run as Administrator.
When the script ends please restart the computer.

From the Security point of view there some critical programs that you need to update...

» Update Adobe Flash Player
The version you have is old and need to be updated. The installation need to be done for both Internet Explorer and Firefox open the Adobe page install Flash Player and make sure you uncheck the box to install any extra programs (Google Chrome and Google Toolbar or McAfee Security Scan Plus) before downloading. Repeat the above steps with the other browser.

» Update Adobe Reader
The Adobe Reader you have is outdated and vulnerable to security exploits you must install the most recent version by visiting the Adobe Reader page, make sure you uncheck the box to install of any extra programs.

hi sleepydude.
no worries about the wait. i'm just thankful you're sticking with me on this and helping out : )

so here are the steps i took:
1. i downloaded and ran your script. i selected all the text in the cmd window that appeared and pasted it into a text file which i'm attaching, just in case you need it.

2. restarted computer

3. downloaded and installed the flash player update for firefox, then did the same for IE.

4. restarted computer

5. downloaded and installed update for adobe reader

6. restarted computer

the popup and action center alert are still appearing.

Hi,

It seems we hit the :bashhead: and the only solution that I can see is to do a Repair Install of Windows.

You will need the Windows 7 key that is on a sticker probably on the back of the laptop or under the laptop battery and a copy of Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 x64 that you can download from the links on the above page.

If you decide to do this I can give you some directions.

lol. i was beginning to think that is the case.
i actually bought windows 8 a while ago when microsoft was selling it for something like $50, though i never installed it. so i'm thinking if maybe now is a good time.
i'll take a few days to think about this and then i'd probably want to make sure i have all my stuff backed up before i do either option - repair install win 7 or install win 8 fresh.

thanks for all your work and patience!

i'll post back in a few days

Ok. It's always important to have backups.
Repair Windows 7 or move to Windows 8 is up to you but if you decide to repair I would recommend to uninstall Internet Explorer 10 first and also disable the Antivirus protection during the install. IE 10 can be reinstalled after the repair.

thanks for all your work and patience!

No problem. You are welcome.

i'll post back in a few days

Ok.
