Compaq presario 305 laptop won't boot, just led's

After not using this laptop for some months, I turned it on. The only response it that the three led's light up for num luck, caps lock and scroll lock. The hdd doesn't spin up. The floppy and CD are in the dock, and so are out of the loop. No changes/upgrades have been made since last working boot. Power adapter tests good. Thought maybe battery was shorted, and removed, no change. Pulled HDD, no change. THe only sign of life other than the led's is a faint click and hiss from the computer speaker. Power switch not a factor, as the laptop automatically boots when plugged into AC power with battery disconnected.

Can anyone suggest some fixes?
