Hi Godawgs, I tried to do step 1, run the fix in OTL it immediately lost the icons and the screen went to a blue screen saying there was a problem, lots of writing that I didn't have time to read before it rebooted itself and asked if I wanted to go into safe mode or normal running.

When I went back into normal running it said that windows had recovered itself and gave me the option to find out why online. I clicked that option however didn't get an answer.

Can you suggest what I do next please.

thanks

Look in the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder for a file named 09022013_hhmmss.log, (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run). OR 09032013_hhmmss.log, (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run). Since I don't know which day you ran the fix I have included both. Just look for the most recent date of Sept 2nd or 3rd and see if there is a log file. If there is please post it.

Hi I think I found the folder, however it was empty it said. I ran it today. Do you want me to go on and do the other steps in the meantime?

Hello: I think when I first got my computer the guy disabled some of my windows defender I think so that it wouldn't clash with AVG. Thought that info might be useful.

Thanks for the information. I can leave Windows Defender turned off but we still need to restore the registry keys for that and the Action Center. Let's try it a different way.

Step-1.

Make a Fresh Restore Point

  • Click the Start Orb Posted Image. Right click Computer and click Properties
  • In the left column under Tasks, click System Protection. Posted Image If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Click the System Protection Tab.
  • In the Available Disks section put a ckeck mark in the box next to OS (C:) (System). Your drive letter will be shown in place of the ?
    • In Windows 7 it will be named Protection Settings. Make sure the protection is On for Local Disk (C:) (System).
Note: It may take some time for the system to populate the Available Disks box, so be patient.
  • Click the Create button at the bottom
  • A System Protection window will open.

    Posted Image
  • Type in a name for the restore point, i.e: Before Registry Fix and click Create
  • The System Protection window will tell you a Restore Point is being created.
  • The System Protection window will then tell you the Restore Point was created successfully. Click OK
  • Click OK again.
  • Close the Control Panel

Step-2.

  • Download the attached WinDefend and wscsvs registry files and save them to the desktop.
    [attachment=66364:WinDefend.reg]
    [attachment=66365:wscsvc.reg]
  • Close the browser and all open windows
  • Right click each .reg file in turn and click Merge. OK any prompts.
  • You should get a message telling you that the file was successfilly merged into the registry.
  • After both files have beem merged into the registry reboot the computer.

Step-3.

Run the Farbar Service Scanner again and post the FSS.txt log

Hi Frances.

That took care of the action center and windows defender service. Now the Windows update service shows that it isn't running. Let's try a little bigger hammer.

Posted Image Run ComboFix
***Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.***

If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications before downloading ComboFix. This is usually done via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image
  • ComboFix will then extract it's files before beginning the scan.

    Posted Image
  • When the scan begins you will see a window like the image below. Although the program states that the scan typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes there are 50 stages or so that it goes through. On a severely infected machine it can take much longer so please be patient.

    Posted Image
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" ComboFix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Please restart the computer. That will cure it.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix Should Not be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Don't forget to reenable your Anti-Virus

Things For Your Next Post:
Please post the logs in the order requested. Do Not attach the logs unless I request it.

Hi Godawgs,

Ok, I downloaded combofix ok, it ran through extraction process ok, then it hit a snag, a warning came up saying that spybot would interfere with it and needs to be disabled, you didn't mentioned that so I need to check if I should do that and the best way to do that?

Also at the same time I got a question from the software prog I have loaded to tell me when something tries to download stuff on my system the message I got was:

wanting to install: c:windows/system32/appmgmts.dll

At this stage I wasn't sure what to do so I just shut everything down and rebooted back to come and ask for next steps from you.

I was thinking that I could have disabled spybot, and carried on but didn't want to take that risk

I await your response.

thanks again.

Hello,

We disabled SpyBot S&D in Step #1 of post #16. Did you re-enable it? If you did, please go back to post #16 and follow the instructions to disable it again. And leave it disabled until we are finished. Then you can enable it again if you wish.

Also at the same time I got a question from the software prog I have loaded to tell me when something tries to download stuff on my system the message I got was:

wanting to install: c:windows/system32/appmgmts.dll

What software program did you install? Please re-read this part of my original post:

Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

  • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Do as the instructions ask, nothing extra. Do Not run things twice unless instructed.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • If I ask a Question just answer it, don't run anything unless directed to.

This includes downloading and installing any new software that I don't know about. It just makes the job harder.

Please disable SpyBot S&D and then re-run ComboFix.

Things For Your Next Post:
