Initially this virus was making a huge mess of my computer. In place of my usual desktop was a blue screen with an error message saying it was caused by
Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c It was sending me crazy amounts of popups, changed my home page, and wouldn't let me get into my email. After following all of your instructions on the "start here" page, the error message is gone (though my old desktop didn't come back), and I am able to access my email again. I reset my home page and it seems to be staying finally. There are still a few things that are making me think the virus might still be running in the background though. My computer is REALLY slow still. Every time I reboot windows I get two error messages saying it can't access:
C:\DOCUME~1\tom\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll
and
C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL
It's been giving me these messages ever since the windows clean up in step 1. The main thing now is the slowness and I want to make sure that everything is off completely and stays off. Here is the Hijack This log from after my last startup. Thank you so much for all of the help so far and for taking the time to look through this. :tazz: I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise.

Hi red85, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download CWShredder . Choose the stand alone version if still available.

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of Winzip.

Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop. Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Once it is finished, run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Regards,

Trevuren

My computer seems to be running a little faster again this morning. I am still getting one of the two messages that I mentioned earlier when I reboot. It is an error saying it can't find:
C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL

I followed your instructions. Here is the log from SpSeHjfix:

Your system still carries multiple infections which will all be treated according to their severity. We cannot skip steps. This next one addresses malware in yoour internet connection. It is imperative that this be fixed so you don't lose your connections with us. This problem is clearly visible in the 010 entries in your HJT log

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type ‘regedit’ without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘backup registry’ in Windows 9x and ‘export’ in XP.

2. Download the LSPfix.txt and read the readme file.

3. Download LSPfix.zip or LSPfix.exe

4. Launch LSPfix.zip and install to its own folder, then click on LSPfix.exe. Or click on LSPfix.exe and it will launch the program.

5. Close all windows except LSPFix.

6. Place a checkmark in the box titled "I know what I am doing"

7. Click on the FINISH button.

8. REBOOT your system.

9. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

NOTE: This step has not addressed the messages issue. They will probably still be there

Regards,

Trevuren

Excellent work

The next most important thing to do is to get rid of a virus that has worked its way into the Adder Services part of your system (023 item)

1. Download "service Filter" from : HERE to your Desktop.

2. Create a New Folder on your Desktop and call it Service Filter

3. Unzip ServiceFilter.zip. Choose the following: Actions>>Extract then Extract All from the next window to open. Choose the new desktop folder you just created as the destination for the extraction.

2. Run Service Filter and a Notepad log will appear.

3. Copy the contents of this log file into this thread.

Trevuren

Sorry it took so long to get to this, had to work. Here is the log from the service filter:

The script did not recognize the services listed below.
This does not mean that they are a problem.

To copy the entire contents of this document for posting:
At the top of this window click "Edit" then "Select All"
Next click "Edit" again then "Copy"
Now right click in the forum post box then click "Paste"

I have a question before I follow those instructions. I went to HJT 'delete an Nt Service' and typed 'Srv32' then clicked 'ok'. But it gave me an HJT message that said "The Service 'Srv32' is enabled and/or running. Disable it first, using HijackThis itself (from the scan results) or the Services.msc window."

Just wanted to make sure that is what I need to do. Thanks for your patience.

Would you believe that I skipped a step. Sorry my mind often rund ahead, way ahead. Please do the following first:

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Service: Srv32 - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\srv32.exe

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

Trevuren
