IE buttons don't work sometimes

On various webpages, some buttons don't work. I'll press the button, but nothing will happen! Not even a blank webpage will come up ... In the botton lefthand part of the screen (the frame of the webpage, not the webpage itself), it will read java script: ... with a description of whatever I'm pressing. For instance, on one website where I am editing personal information ... an interest of mine in books, the grey frame of the webpage in the bottom lefthand corner will read: "java script: editInterest('books'). Do I need an updated version of javascript or something???
