Hi :)

This error means serious registry damage. We can try to unroll registry to the earlier version, but Recovery Console will be needed.

Do you have access to another XP CD?

He can get a recovery console CD by doing the following...

Please download ARCDC from Artellos.com.
  • Double click ARCDC.exe
  • Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. Please pick: Windows Professional SP2 & SP3
  • You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
  • You will see a few dos screens flash by, this is normal.
  • Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
  • The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC
Your ISO is located on your desktop.

He should then perform a chkdsk /r and if that doesn't work do How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting.

Well, that's exactly what I was going to do, but I used to evaluate user, not just to put a lot of instructions at a time :)

But yes, that's the solution :)

Insert CD into your machine and boot up from it.
Instructions how to do it: here

You should see a window like this one:

Posted Image

Choose Repair option.

Next you should see something like this:

Microsoft Windows XPâ„c Recovery Console.

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows XP installation would like to log onto
(To cancel, press ENTER)?

Here you should choose which windows you'd like to repair. Usually it will be only one.
Type it's number and hit enter.

Next you'll be prompted for administrative password.
It's not the same as your user password!
Type in administrative password or just hit enter if there isn't any.

After this you should be in a command prompt.

At this step we will restore the registry to it's default state, after the installation. Any software won't run.

You should type-in these commands:
(one line = one command, each of them needs to be confirmed with enter)

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

If all will go succesful, you should be able to boot into windows.
Restoring newer registry version will be possible only if you have system restore turned on.
