Hello everyone,
Having problems with window 7 updates.I am a new member and have tried most of the Microsoft fixes and forums on offer with no joy.
Errors 80070005 and 8000FFFF keep popping up.Strange things keep happening like a window will popup out of the blue saying my windows 7 home premium is not genuine. When i look at my basic computer details it tells me windows is activated and gives me my ID number.I have rung microsoft and they have told me my windows 7 is genuine.Google chrome all of a sudden keeps crashing.Out of the blue my printer goes from ready to offline.sfc /scannow tells me a number of files are corrupted and could not be fixed.I have done all the usual checks for viruses, trojans etc.I am nearly a pensioner and a relative newcomer to computing and i do not understand why a fix does not exist for these errors.Even after running the microsoft fix it tools you are told the error is fixed when in reality its just the same as it was. I am slowly coming round to thinking of doing a windows7 reinstall which i have never done before.Would be grateful to you fellow members for your help and advice. Please help an old codger like me back to sanity.

Best Wishes

Error 0x80070005 is a permissions problem. I would download and save Windows Repair All in One:

http://www.tweaking....all_in_one.html

Then right click on it and Run As Admin.

Just do the step that give you the screen shown on the page. Check the following:

Reset Registry Permissions
Reset File Permissions
Register System Files
Repair Windows Updates

(the other options won't hurt anything just take longer.)

Warning: If you have Spybot S&D's teatimer installed then first:
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere.

* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
* If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
* On the left hand side, click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident icon in the list
* Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer

Restart your computer after running All-in-one if it doesn't do it for you. Then try your update again. Does it still fail? Which error?

Run SFC /scannow again and if it still fails:

Copy the next two lines:

findstr /c:"[SR]" \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log > \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Copy and Paste the text from Notepad into a reply.

Didn't really want you to download and run Spybot. The instructions were if you already had it because it screws up your permissions. Uninstall it if you can.

First let's make sure your hard drive and system files are OK.

1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs. Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application. Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).

sfc /scannow

(SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files.
(This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint? IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

Copy the next two lines:

findstr /c:"[SR]" \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log > \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Copy and paste the text from notepad or if it is too big, just attach the file.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Now try your update. Then copy the next 2 lines:

attrib -r -h -s c:\Windows\windowsupdate.log
notepad c:\Windows\windowsupdate.log

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Notepad should open. Copy the text in notepad and paste it into a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System. (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Attach the file to your next post as it is rather large.

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save. Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Good Evening Ron,
I would just like you to know that i have a real go at things first before i get in touch with you.Its only when i am really stuck that i will ask for help which being a relative novice might be quite a few times.I had a few problems which was down to mebut i kept trying. I have done the hard drive check ran sfc /scannow and that came back the same as i have had (some files were corrupted and could not be fixed ).Towards the bottom of the page a small white box said CHAR to copy up to.I then started to copy the next two lines findstr /c:"[SR]" etc.And i presume at the end of the first line i have to press enter which i did and it came up with findstr cannot open \windows\logs\cbs.log.I think i should tell you i have never used notepad or pasted or done an attachment into a reply. If you want to bail out now i would fully understand.I will never give up and will stay the distance.I would be grateful if you could teach me but i am concerned about the amount of your time i am taking up.If you dont mind i would be over the moon for your further help.

Very Best Wishes

I'm retired so time is not a problem. Besides the malware forum is slow right now. I think the malware writers are concentrating their efforts of Windows 8 or maybe they are on vacation.

I tell you to copy the lines because it's easy to retype them wrong. A missing space or a space in the wrong place will mess it up. To Copy something highlight the text and press Ctrl + c. In this case make sure you highlight both lines. To paste into the command window you have to right click on the window and select Paste or sometimes Edit then Paste. When you paste multiple lines sometimes the last line doesn't get an Enter so I have you hit Enter at the end. There is no need to hit Enter after each line unless you copy only a single line.

(A quick way to highlight all the text in a notepad log is to do Ctrl + a then you can copy it with Ctrl + c. To paste into a Reply you just click in the reply and do Ctrl + v.)

The cbs.log file is periodically purged so you may need to do the sfc /scannow first to make sure that there is something in the log for the script to put into the junk.txt file.

The only thing that SFC is complaining about is the MSDTC.LOG. This makes no sense as it is the nature of log files that they get changed from the original. I would say it is a mistake on SFC's part to even look at the file.

It should be at c:\Windows\System32\Msdtc\MSDTC.LOG I see other people complaining about the same nonsense so I think it's OK. Let's just make sure that the permissions on the file are OK:

Please download GrantPerms.zip
http://download.blee.../GrantPerms.zip
and save it to your desktop.
Unzip the file and depending on the system run GrantPerms.exe or GrantPerms64.exe
Copy and paste the following in the edit box:

c:\Windows\System32\Msdtc\MSDTC.LOG

Click Unlock. When it is done click "OK".
Click List Permissions and post the result (Perms.txt) that pops up. A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Now lets see if we can open the file in notepad:

Copy the next line:

notepad \Windows\System32\Msdtc\MSDTC.LOG

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter.

Log: 'System' Date/Time: 02/09/2013 19:41:22
Type: Error Category: 0
Event: 7026 Source: Service Control Manager
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: 4959228drv aswSnx nckkof ofvpmj

The last two look like malware so I think we need to move this to the Malware Forum as I am not allowed to run the scans I need in this forum.

I need for you to start a new topic in the Malware forum:

http://www.geekstogo...alware-removal/

When you start your topic, call it: For RKinner

then I will see it and hopefully noone else will pick it up. Include in your topic your OTL and Extras Logs:

Download OTL from
http://www.geekstogo...timers-list-it/
and Save it to your desktop.

Run OTL (Vista or Win 7 => right click and Run As Administrator)

select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

You should get two logs. Please copy and paste both of them.

The OTL and Extras log may be too big to fit in a single post so you may have to Reply to your new topic in order to post the Extras log.

Come back here and tell me when you have posted so I can get to the topic before someone else picks it up.
