Thanks for the info. But I went ahead and used the XP cd that came with the computer, but I forgot to do Windows update before I downloaded avast!, SUPERAntispyware, SpywareBlaster, and MBAM (all free versions). Then I ran scans. It found many threats. Would that be because I didn't run WinUpdate first? Is it okay to run it now and then update the rest of the drivers? Or should I start all over? I don't want to screw this up, because they are counting on me, so if I have to do it all over to get it right, then that's what I'll do.

I appreciate all your patience with me. I am learning a lot from you guys!

Please give us some details about the threats found so we can evaluate the situation.
Isn't normal to detect malware on a fresh installed system unless they are Adaware and PUP found on setups of the free software you have downloaded.

Ooops...I already deleted the threats (I think). Maybe they went into quarantine...not sure. But I will finish doing Windows Update and loading all the drivers. Then I will re-run all the scans, and if I find anything, I will note them and paste them here. Thanks guys! And I especially want to thank SleepyDude for helping me to get back online.
