Ok. Let's try this (thanks to Tom982):

Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  • Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  • Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  • A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  • Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  • Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  • Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  • When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link. It must be downloaded using Internet Explorer.

I completed steps 1 - 8 and did not get an error. All it said was the installation was complete. Am I suppose to try a normal Windows update again or something else? I will wait for your instructions. Here is the log you asked for:

Ok. I just attempeted a windows update again. It had 2 important updates for me to install. One one a Windows Defender update (KB915597)and The previous update that we were having trouble with (KB2862966). As you can see from the images below, it installed the first one just fine, however the KB2862966 one still shows an error.

Ok. Can you try installing it in safe mode one more time?

If that fails, try normal mode once more after it.

Ok. Let's try to install the update from a clean boot:

First, download the update again from here.

Then, follow these instructions to do a clean boot, and try to install the update after that. Then you can re-enable the items that you disabled for the clean boot and reboot.

Hi rockitout,
Sorry for the delays. I am not very experienced with windows update issues, so I am having to wait on someone else to help me, who is very busy right now. We should hopefully have something later today. :)

Let's try this:

Can you boot into the recovery environment, and launch command prompt please: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt

When command prompt is launched, type in the following command and press enter:

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Then reboot your computer, booting into Windows normally. Run this FixIt in aggressive mode: You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services

Then try updating and post your CBS log please (located at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS).

I tried your suggestion however, when I Type the command in the command prompt, I get this back: 'DISM' is not a recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Hi rockitout,

I think we are going to have to do a repair install of Vista. This should not affect your programs or files. Tom982 is going to upload an .iso for you to use after the weekend. After he does that, I will get some instructions for you. Posted Image

I still have the ISO that you had me install on a thumb drive. Could we use that or no?
