My wife's laptop suddenly stopped booting. It is a Lenovo and she doesn't have any cd's with it so I went and d/led a windows vista recovery/repair iso to try and repair it. It keeps saying hdcom.dll is corrupted or missing but the repair cd will not fix it. I can't go into safe mode or anything. I tried system restore but didn't fix it either. Please help

Are you sure about the file name?

Can you access Repair your computer?

• Turn on the computer and start pressing F8 to access the boot menu like this:
  
  
• On the Startup Repair process click Cancel
• click Command Prompt on the System Recovery Options screen
• on the Command Prompt type the command:
  

  chkdsk /R /x C:

Next,

Check Windows System files integrity

• type the following command and press Enter:
  

  sfc /scannow
  

  Note: This may take some time to finish.

Restart the computer and let me know the result.

In that case boot from the windows vista recovery CD you should be able to access the System Recovery Options also.

Before running a full sfc scan try this command:

sfc /scanfile=c:\windows\system32\kdcom.dll

If the command above give you any error try to run the full scan:

sfc /scannow

ok i had to buy a windows vista recovery/repair cd from neosmart technologies because i dont have original vista cd anymore. How do i access the command prompt from that?

I got to prompt and typed that in and it said "there is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again." Which I do the restart and it just reboots and comes right to the error page about kdcom.dll

Let me upload a Windows Vista RE for you... but I need to know first if windows is 32-bits or 64-bits.

Did you try sfc /scanfile=c:\windows\system32\kdcom.dll?

Ok, Lets try this:

On the Command Prompt type:

dism /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Restart the system and access the Command Prompt like you did before, try the sfc command above to restore the kdcom.dll file.

im having to use my windows 7 cd to access the command prompt because the windows vista recovery cd I downloaded from neosmart wont let me access the command prompt. when I typed in dism /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions it said error: 50. "the command specified is unknown or not supported when running dism.exe against a windows vista with service pack 1 or windows server 2000 target image.
