Just transferred my office 7 to my new windows 8 pc. I placed it on the desktop because I didnt know the root file it should go in. Where can I place it so it operates normally as before on my other pc?

Do you mean you just copied Word from one computer to another, rather than installing it?

No.

Because my Microsoft Office 7 software came on a disk I had to install it onto a thmbdrive and then place it into my new pc that has no disk drive.

If I understand you correctly, you installed Office on a thumb drive and then copied it to your new PC? Why not copy the setup to the thumb drive, then copy that to the new PC and install it? You can't copy an installed version of Office to a different PC and expect it to work.

Is this a new copy of Office, or one that came with your other computer?

I have the original Office 2007 disk and when I copied it - it asked for product key etc. All the programs seem to work - the only thing is that the "margin ruler" is missing in the word doc which i dont know how to activate?

ok, I can answer the last question:

You can use the horizontal and vertical rulers in Word to align text, graphics, tables, and other elements in your document.

To view the horizontal ruler across the top of your Word document and the vertical ruler along the left edge of your document, you must be in Print Layout view.
To show or hide the horizontal and vertical rulers, click View Ruler at the top of the vertical scroll bar.

View Ruler button

Note The vertical ruler will not appear if it is turned off. To turn on the vertical ruler, do the following:
1.Click the File tab.
2.Click Options.
3.Click Advanced, and then scroll down to the Display section.
4.Under Display, select the Show vertical ruler in Print Layout view check

this was found by clicking on the question mark (should be top right) for help. then entering "show ruler" in the search field.
