Hello Geeks To Go. I'm having some problems:

A few days ago all my open applications started closing suddenly and my computer started to shut down and then reboot, just like a normal restart. Except I never told it to restart. A few minutes later, it happened again. And then after it booted back up again, I started hearing advertisements coming from my speakers. I closed my browser and all other applications, but I could still hear them. It sounded like I had a bunch of commercials all playing at the same time. I couldn’t see anything in the task manager that was causing it. So I ran a virus scan with my BitDefender. Before the scan could finish, the computer crashed with a blue screen of death, possibly out of RAM. This happened a couple times until I finally thought to disconnect the internet. I was able to complete a scan after that, but the scan didn’t find anything; same results in safe mode. I did a scan with Spybot S&D, but it found nothing. I installed Ad-Aware and scanned with it. It found some things: “OptimumInstaller(fs)”, “Backdoor.SDBot”, and 2 instances of “Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT” were quarantined and deleted. The noises came back when I connected to the internet.

So I tried MalwareBytes. It also found a couple trojans called “PUP.Zugo” and “Trojan.FakeMS” and cleaned them, but the problem persisted. The next day I scanned again and it found the “PUP.Zugo” again and cleaned it again. After that it hasn’t detected anything. I can still hear the ads.

So I decided to try a system restore. I tried to restore a restore point that was created 5 days before the first mysterious restart. When the system restore stopped, a dialog box came up saying that the restore was unsuccessful. But when I rebooted, I could see that some things were different – MalwareBytes and Ad-aware were no longer installed, so it partially worked. But I could still hear the advertisements. So I did a system restore again to undo the first restore. I restored it to the most recent date, just to get my system back to normal. This second system restore had the same failure message again, but again, I could notice changes. I ran a couple more scans after that, but now I’m at the point where none of my scans will detect anything malicious. I did not disable any of my other virus scanners while scanning, I’m not sure if that matters.

Now, when I’m connected to the internet, MalwareBytes will occasionally have a little window pop up from the taskbar saying it has blocked outgoing access to a malicious website from the process svchost.exe. When I look at this process in the task manager, there are several processes called this, but one of them (while connected to the internet) usually has 300 MB ~ 1.5 GB of “Memory (Private Working Set)” and about 25 CPU. Its User Name is SYSTEM. I’ve been setting it to Low Priority to hinder it. I tried ending the process once, and it stopped for about 5 seconds but then a new one appeared and behaved the same way as the first one.

Well, that’s everything I’ve tried. Other than the noise from the advertisements, my applications take extra long to open sometimes; once they open, they often become “Not Responding”; and I still get the blue screen of death occasionally. I haven’t seen any more of the sudden clean restarts like the first one that started it all. Oh, and I can also hear the advertisements while in safe mode with networking.

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.


These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Hey Gringo, thanks for your help! I ran the scans. The reports are below. I don't hear the advertisements as often as before, but I still hear a couple every now and then. Some programs are still running slow and the Malwarebytes still has pop-ups saying that it has blocked access to a malicious website.

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

Hey Gringo, I had a few issues with that scan. A few seconds after ComboFix started running, my BitDefender dashboard window came up in front. I had disabled it prior to running ComboFix, so I don't know why it did that, or if it was supposed to do that. I hit the x on it. A little while later, the computer restarted. When it came back up, was ComboFix supposed to continue running? It wasn't. I had a dialog box saying that Windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown. I didn't see if it had crashed; I wasn't watching the scan. I tried to pull up the task manager to see if ComboFix was still running, but my computer crashed with a blue screen. After booting up again, I closed Malwarebytes and Adaware again (they loaded on start-up), and ran ComboFix again. The BitDefender window came up again, I closed it again. This time I watched the scan and it finished this time without rebooting or anything. I was not connected to the internet during any of that, fyi. The report is below. I still had the advertisements, and the computer was still really slow. Also some of my Internet Explorer settings were reset. It didn't remember me when I came to this website. That doesn't bother me, just letting you know about it.

I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • more than one report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". The one that I need is the larger one. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

    Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

    If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

Hi Gringo. The computer seems a lot better so far. I haven't heard any advertisements, haven't crashed, internet explorer is moving like normal. I feel like if I wait long enough something will happen to let me know I'm still infected, heh. The TDSS report is attached. There was not a report called "RKreport[2].txt". They are "RKreport[0]_S_09222013_211341" and "RKreport[0]_D_09222013_211411". Looks like one is the Scan report and the other is the Remove report. I put the Scan report below. Let me know if you need the other one. I am noticing a little bit of lag while I type here. Every now and then, the cursor freezes for a couple seconds while I'm backspacing.

I might not have a chance to reply on Monday or Tuesday. I should be able to get back to you again on Wednesday or Thursday, fyi.

It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:


AV: BitDefender Antivirus
AV: Lavasoft Ad-Aware


Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove all but one of them.





At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

I didn't have any problems with that script. I forgot to disable my BitDefender before running it, but ComboFix asked me to disable it, so I did. That was the only thing. The computer seems fine. Should I begin deleting/uninstalling these programs like tdsskiller and adwcleaner and all their logs? Or should I keep them?

Hello

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)

Programs to remove


Adobe Reader X (10.1.8)
Java™ 6 Update 20

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
  • when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
  • put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
  • when prompted select yes then on next
  • Once done click Finish.

Update Adobe reader

Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

  • Run the installer to install the application.
  • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
  • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
  • Click Run Cleaner.
  • Close CCleaner.

  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.


Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis program
  • Save HijackThis to your desktop.
  • Right Click on Hijackthis and select "Run as Admin" (XP users just need to double click to run)
  • Click on "Do A system scan and save a logfile" (if you do not see "Do A system scan and save a logfile" then click on main menu)
  • copy and paste hijackthis report into the topic

Hi Gringo
I didn't have any problems with this step. After installing the Java, I have a message in IE asking if I want to enable the Java Plug-in SSV Helper add-on. Should I enable that? Sometimes when I first open IE, it is pretty sluggish and I usually get a message saying I can speed up browsing by disabling add-ons. It doesn't look like I have very many though. That was happening long before all this other stuff happened. But other than that, things seem ok with the computer.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis (rightclick and run as admin)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scanner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the Run ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the add/on to be installed
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
    Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • wait for the virus definitions to be downloaded
  • Wait for the scan to finish

When the scan is complete

  • If no threats were found
  • put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
  • close program
  • report to me that nothing was found

  • If threats were found
  • click on "list of threats found"
  • click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop
  • Click on back
  • put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
  • click on finish
  • close program
  • copy and paste the report here
