Hello Everybody (anybody),
This is my first post. I am running XP professional on a rebuilt Compaq/HP desktop. A few weeks back my Symantec AntiVirus detected Tracur Gen 4 which showed up post quarentine on every bootup. I ran an HJT log with ProcessExplorer and reviewed everyline. Symantec kept identifying a DLL associated with my NetGear router that some how I seemed to have installed within the Symantec folder itself (dont remember putting it there but oh well). Anyway I renamed the DLL in the Application Data Folder and killed the registry entry that called it. Fixed a couple more programs that I didnt want and now my System scans clean but now I can no longer update my AntiVirus Definition. I can connect on-line and download but it still has June 7th for the last update. I suspect I still have the virus but not sure if is still working behind the scenes. One of my computers new strange behaviors is it turns itself back on after shut down. I took it of the internet when I found out it was doing that. I ran another HJT log to make sure I got everything I was worried about What's my next move Puleeze !

Hello GotNoTime and welcome to GeeksToGo .

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem.

Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:

  • please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear
  • all logs/reports, etc. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In Notepad click Format, uncheck Word wrap if it is checked
  • if you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
  • the fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
IMPORTANT:

Please DO NOT install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

===================================================

Disable Spybot’s TeaTimer

Spybot’s TeaTimer can sometimes prevent some things from being fixed.

Please disable TeaTimer for now: it can be re-activated once your log is clean.

  • open Spybot Search & Destroy
  • in the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected
  • choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt
  • expand the "Tools" menu
  • click "Resident"
  • uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box
  • in the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
===================================================

Download and run AdwCleaner

Download AdwCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.

  • run AdwCleaner
  • when it has finished, select Clean
  • if it asks to reboot, allow the reboot
  • on reboot a log will be produced; please attach the content of the log to your next reply.
===================================================

Download and run Junkware Removal Tool

Posted Image Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  • the tool will open and start scanning your system
  • please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications
  • on completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open
  • post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Please run OTL again after you’ve completed the above. Can you also include Extras.txt which you can find in the same location as the OTL log file, (C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Desktop).

Logs to include in the next post:

AdwCleaner log
JRT.txt
Extras.txt
New OTL log

Thanks

Thanks for the logs but there was no Extras.txt log. Please send that as it contains information that I need to see.

Also, do you know what these are?:

[2013/06/04 16:28:05 | 000,000,000 | ---- | C] () -- C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Application Data\doesexist
[2012/03/06 21:52:26 | 000,000,000 | ---- | C] () -- C:\WINDOWS\XGY12.INI

Is “XGY12.INI” related to the XGY12.com web address?

You have at least one Trojan so we’ll try to deal with that and do some more searches.

I suggest you don’t use the Internet except for answering these posts until we see what else is lurking.

Run OTL

  • double click on the icon to run it.
  • copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    [Reboot]

  • click the Run Fix button at the top
  • let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • please post the OTL fix log but don’t run OTL again until all these instructions are completed.

Run TDSSKiller

Please download TDSSKiller.zip

  • extract it to your desktop
  • double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • press Start Scan

    only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected - Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead : do not change it to Delete or Quarantine as it may delete infected files that are required for Windows to operate properly.

  • click Continue > Reboot now
  • copy and paste the log in your next reply
  • a copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\) called TDSSKiller_*** (*** denotes version & date)
Additional information:

If you get the warning about a file “UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose
Skip and click on Continue

Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\(TDSS File System) - please choose Skip.

If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.

Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue and then reboot to finish the cleaning process.

Remember, if Cure is not available, choose Skip instead; do not choose “Delete” unless instructed.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.69.0 log created on 09282013_100558

TDS SKiller found nothing. Incidentally Feekjl.Dll is the one I changed the name on but did not delete before we started. I believe I added a number after the "jl" but I cant seem to locate it just now. Here is the log for that.

There was something that OTL couldn't deal with so I'd like you to run a different scan.

Download and run ComboFix

Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • when finished, it will produce a report
  • please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks

Ran ComboFix. I see I still have that 'Smile Box' program in supplementary scans which I though I had deleted a couple times now....
Added a manual restore point just incase

If you want to remove My StartPage (Smilebox) as your home page, you can change it by clicking on Tools, Internet Options and under the "General" tab, type in the address that you want to be your home page.

======================================================

One of your StarForce drivers needs to be replaced. You can use the StarForce Removal Tool to remove it but it means that whichever game installed StarForce will stop working. However, if you reinstall the game, it will reinstall StarForce.

======================================================

Run Farbar Service Scanner

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.

Make sure the following options are checked:

Internet Services
Windows Firewallsfc
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender
Other Services

  • press "Scan".
  • it will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • please copy and paste the log to your reply.
======================================================

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

Click here.
  • double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program – (Note: Vista & Windows 7 users, please right-click and select “Run as Administrator”)
  • at the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • if an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

======================================================

Run Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.

  • save it to your Desktop.
  • double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • a Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Logs to include with the next post:

FSS.txt
Mbam.txt
checkup.txt

Can you try to update your antivirus and tell me what outstanding problems there are.

OK,

So we ran into a few problems here.
I was able to run FarBar (See attached). Had a little trouble with AVG though. My home page has always been AOL. Smile Box isnt listed on my internet options.....Also I dont have a game called "Starforce". Not sure what that is.? When I downloaded AVG I did not see an option for a quick scan. It didnt give me an opportunity to update.IT just started a first time FUll Scan. I left it on and checked every few hours. After about 6 I found it stuck on "Aiodlite.dll" with only 13 items scanned. I dont think it is working very well right now.

Had a little trouble with AVG though.

I didn’t ask you to run AVG. I asked you to run Malwarebytes and SecurityCheck then try to update Norton (Symantec AntiVirus).

After about 6 I found it stuck on "Aiodlite.dll"

That is related to Acrobat and should not (normally) be infected.

Smile Box isnt listed on my internet options.....Also I dont have a game called "Starforce".

Starforce is not a game – it is installed with computer games and is mainly used to protect them which is probably how you got it installed. According to your logs it is causing problems and needs to be removed. The only consequence may be that whatever game instigated its installation may have to be reinstalled.

Please run Mbam, SecurityCheck and the Starforce removal tool then post the results.

Thanks

Whoops! grabbed the wrong program. Now I got AVG running amuck. Anyway ran Starforce removal. Ran M-Bam. Results were negative (see attached log) and I ran Security Force (see log attached). I was not able to update Symantec still. Incidentally AVG launched it self. It identified The DLL I renamed in my Application Data Folder ,now Feekjl2.dll as Trojan Downloader Generic13.13DMW It also identified NIVIDA nvCpl Container\iguampe.dll as Trogan Dropper.Generic8.BGUM.Prior to joining this site I wondered if I would loose my monitor if I killed that one. I had recently removed my after market video card because it was going bad and the system had an internal Vid Card. Not sure if there would be Nvidia chips on that one ??? At any rate I did not take any action on either of those two files both in Application Data Folder.

I’d like another ComboFix report to see what is currently installed on your computer.

  • push the Windows key, (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button) + "R"
  • copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box and then click OK:
C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

====================================================

Run OTL

  • open OTL again, click on Extra Registry -> Use Safelist
  • then click Run Scan
Post back with the 2 OTL logs and the ComboFix log

Thanks

ComboFix is hanging up. It is conflicting with both Symantec and AGV even though I disabled both. I am trying to review the link on disabling them as the instructions seem to be different from what I am seeing. ComboFix is to run first before the other instruction -correct?
