I have a home built system with Win.7 64bit. I have some questions as to Administrator and user profiles. I originally set it up with me as Admin. Then my wife decided she wanted it. (I was actually building it for her anyway) So if you go into Control Panel it shows her as Administrator. But every once and a while when trying to do something it will say you have to be running as Administrator. Now when I looked in the User Profiles it shows a Default profile and then a profile with her name and mine together. It is running on the default profile. I am confused. One of the reasons I am asking this ,I am trying to reinstall Office 2010. Microsoft has a web site the tells you how to remove the Office. I have done it all but it won't let me re-install. Please explain what is the profiles are all about.

I don't fully understand the setup of the profiles on your PC, so what I'd like to do is gather a bit of information if you'd be so kind. Please follow these steps and then post back, after which we can assist you further.

STEP ONE: MiniToolBox Collecting Information
  • At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items.
    • List content of Hosts
    • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices
    • Only-Problems (leave it checked)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory Size
  • List Minidump Files
  • List Restore Points

After you've selected just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy/paste that into a reply.
STEP TWO: TempFileCleaner
As a good rule of thumb, I like to get rid of temp/junk files off any and all systems I work on. Reason being that I've seen some build up of caches and junk files cause all sorts of chaos on multiple occasions, so why not just take a few minutes to clean the PC up.However before you download and run the program, please make sure you save all work and close out of all programs accept your browser (which also will need to be closed down after the download, before running the program).

Now that we've saved and closed out of all your applications/programs, please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC). Once that is done, close out of all your open applications/programs and then please 'Right Click' and select Run As Administrator from the Context Menu. Please let this run, uninterrupted. Once it's finished, it may ask you to reboot your machine - If it does, please allow it to reboot at this time and after Windows loads back up move on to the next step. If it does not require a reboot, please move on to the next step now.
Please post up the requested log from Step One and any more information you can give, then I will review this and help you further. Thank you for your time and patience as we work through this.

So for the users, I see you have an Administrator account (as usual) and another account called Bill's. Are you logging in with Bill's? Perhaps making a new admin account is the best option at this point for her, then transferring the files over to it, if you'd like.

The original account can be renamed, please do the following...

STEP THREE:
  • Push the 'Windows Key' and 'R' at same time (the 'Windows Key' is located between Ctrl and Alt)
  • Copy and paste or type out the following into the 'Run' window: COMPMGMT.MSC
  • Click on 'Local Users and Groups'
  • Inside of that, click on 'Users'
  • Please type a list of all shown accounts
  • Does the 'Administrator' account exist? If yes:
  • Does it have a white circle with a down arrow in black on its icon? (meaning disabled)
Please post back with all the details when you can, also do you have anything against creating that new account and transferring items over?

That doesn't show in Computer Management.(Local Users and Groups) On the left side under Computer Management (Local) is System Tools,Storage, and Services and Applications. I am willing to create a new account so long as it won't create new problems.

I'm sorry about that, I forgot you are using Home Premium not Ultimate/Professional version of windows. Let me revise my step three at this time.

STEP THREE:
  • Push the 'Windows Key' and 'R' at same time (the 'Windows Key' is located between Ctrl and Alt)
  • Copy and paste or type out the following into the 'Run' window: C:\Users

Please review all folders listed and type them out in a response please.

Once you post back, we'll go from there and see what needs to be done.

Interesting. Well let's go ahead and create a new user at this time, with the rights of Administrator. Here's how I'd like you to do that.

STEP FOUR:
Instead of making the accounts like usual, we will be doing it through a command line this time. To do this you need to open a command line prompt in an elevated state AKA Run as administrator. To do this, you can follow this guide: http://technet.micro...c947813(v=ws.10).aspx

Now that you have an elevated command prompt open, type in the following lines (hitting your ENTER key after each one) but replace the USER word with a name of the account you want to make and replace PASSWORD with what ever password you want (please only use letters for both USER and PASSWORD).
net user /add USER PASSWORD
net localgroup administrators USER /add
net share concfg=C:\ /grant:USER,full
net user USER *
Once you've done this, please reboot and try logging into this account at the login screen. Now give it a bit of a test and try to see if same issue applies or not. Let me know of any errors it throws at you and/or how the new account works.

First. The (http://technet.micro...c947813(v=ws. 10).aspx doesn't work. Second. Does it have to be set up with a password? Third and Most important. Is this safe to do? This is my wife's. I found out how to get to the Command Line Prompt Run as Administrator. So that took care of first.

My mistake on the link, glad you got it working anyway. Sorry about that. Moving on to the other items: Not really, you can leave that blank but for right now - Can you just create it with a password? We can remove it later IF it works well. As to being safe, Command Line Commands are built into Windows. This also is safer than if we rip apart your current user to see what it is doing. So yes, it's safe. Worst case it throws up an error and doesn't work, which will tell me a lot. Best case is we make a new account and it works, then we just have to swap over icons/data/files to that new account and remove its password - Then delete/disable the old account for the time being.

So yes, it is safe and I'd like you to still do it.

Ok my friend. Now on boot I got the login screen showing a Lou,and a lou I know that the one I just set up was lou so I clicked on it and put in the pass word. Boy it is different. First let me say, that at first The Command Prompt would not let me put in lou because the computer name was lou. So I had to change the computer name. I named it Weezie. ( It's a long story) So now when I go into control panel and check Users there is (Default) (iisAPPOOL\DefaultApp) (Weezie\Bill's) (Weezie\lou) And the desktop is missing icons.

Yes it will be different as many of your icons and data are stored on your profile, we can transfer all this easily but I don't want to do that unless the prior issues seem to have been resolved by this. As for the users screen in control panel, could you take a screen shot of it by chance? I don't really understand it all. iisappool shows as though it is a DOMAIN or COMPUTER NAME. That is a bit odd.

Please try to use that user for a bit and see if any of the old issues still happen. Once we figure that out, if it looks like they have been we can move over your icons, data, files, etc. But moving them over before the issue seems to be resolved just doesn't make sense.
