Hi,

Using XP with all updates as of today with IE8 and ADSL2

I am haaving a problem with The Internet and the Supplier.

When the Internet is working is goes well and I have no complaints about that.

But every now and then the Internet stops and can take some time to start up again.

For example in a four hour time period I had 17 minutes when the Internet actually worked.

I have noticed that when this happens all four lights on the modem are on and steady but when it is working my connection, No. 4, flickers.

I use a cable connection as the old wireless system died.

When I ring Support all I get is 'your speed readings are above what you are paying for.' But when I try to explain about the non working times they go back to the speed readings again.

Upload Speed 0.88Mbps Download Speed 10.68Mbps Ping 38ms is a fair average.

My computer has been checked by a Technician and the Internet is the same with my Laptop.

Any ideas what I do next?

Regards

Number four flickering is likely showing activity from your PC. Solid light means it's available but not being used. At least that is the most likely without knowing your exact model. Now for your speeds, what are you paying for? Your down seems to be well below what it should based on your up. 25/10 or so by chance? And you mention that a tech' has checked out your PC, then state your laptop has same internet? With just a modem, you can only have ONE PC connected at a time, unless you get a DHCP server/device (router for instance) involved. Correct?

I'm just trying to understand the situation, so please bare with me. But to start, answer those questions and follow these two steps.

STEP ONE: MiniToolBox Repairs and Log Gathering
  • At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items.
  • Flush DNS
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP Configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • Only-Problems (leave it checked)
After you've selected just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy/paste that into a reply.
STEP TWO: Temp File Cleaner
As a good rule of thumb, I like to get rid of temp/junk files off any and all systems I work on. Reason being that I've seen some build up of caches and junk files cause all sorts of chaos on multiple occasions, so why not just take a few minutes to clean the PC up.However before you download and run the program, please make sure you save all work and close out of all programs accept your browser (which also will need to be closed down after the download, before running the program).

Now that we've saved and closed out of all your applications/programs, please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC). Once that is done, close out of all your open applications/programs and then please 'Right Click' and select Run As Administrator from the Context Menu. Please let this run, uninterrupted. Once it's finished, it may ask you to reboot your machine - If it does, please allow it to reboot at this time and after Windows loads back up move on to the next step. If it does not require a reboot, please move on to the next step now.

Hi PhrantiQ,

I forgot to mention that as I live in Australia there may be a time difference between replies.

My modem is a TP-Link TD-8840 ADSL2+ Modem Router and can run up to 4 connections and I use 20GBs per month/ADSL2+ 100GB Standalone.

Basicly I just switch it on and use the Internet. After each session I give all the Temp files etc a good clean out and run the Anti virus program.

I followed your instructions using Temp File Cleaner and MiniToolBox.

It seems like you have one or more adware/junkware applications installed at this time, such as OptimizerPro1 (Version: 1.0). Only our trained, malware removal experts can assist with the removal of those items. You would need to make a new thread in the appropriate section, to do so you need to first follow the procedures for creating an appropriate post/thread, which can be found HERE. Once you're ready to make the new thread/post, please post it in the appropriate section which can be found HERE. After you post, a malware removal expert will guide you through the process of removing any malicious software off your PC. There may be more items beyond that one that are directly effecting your browser as well, in which could be the cause of your issue. Before I can say that with more conviction I do have a few more steps to look into.

STEP THREE: Resetting Internet Explorer Settings
  • Now open your Start Menu and go into your Control Panel
  • Once in your Control Panel go to Internet Options (might want to make the 'View by:' set to small)
  • In this window, please go to the Advanced tab.
  • On this tab, let's click the following; Reset...
  • Don't check the box on the next page, then click 'Reset' at the bottom
  • Once this little window (Reset Internet Explorer Settings) puts check boxes next to all 3 items, click 'Close'
  • This will exit the Internet Options, please reopen it via Control Panel
  • Let's verify a few settings, listed below;
  • Go to the tab 'Connections' and click on 'LAN Settings'. Unless using a proxy, verify 'Automatically detect settings' checkbox is checked and nothing else is entered.
  • Go back to the 'General' tab now and in the 'Browsing History' select 'Delete' and then check all the boxes except 'Form Data' and 'Passwords'. Then hit 'Delete' at the bottom. Give this a minute to run.
  • Make sure to also set the 'Homepage' to a known page (www.Google.com for instance) while on the 'General' tab.
  • Now close and restart your Internet Explorer. Does issue persist?
STEP FOUR: Staying Up To Date
  • It is key to keep your Java, Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader up to date if you have them installed. Updates fix security exploits, which is key to remaining secure and keep things running smooth. Below are direct links to the sites to download the latest versions for each of these programs.
  • Java
  • After you start the installation, please uncheck both boxes for 'Install the Ask Toolbar...' and 'Set and keep Ask as my...'.
Further Discussion On Java: Guides to disable Java and re-enable only when you need it (recommended if you must have it installed):
STEP FIVE: Windows Repair Utility
  • Please download Windows Repair (AIO - Portable) and go to the 2nd from last tab labeled Start Repairs. Once on this tab, please select the button Start. The warning that pops up can be followed or not, however sometimes running those at this time can be non beneficial or further worsen the issues.

Inside of here, please check all of the following items:
    • Register System Files
    • Repair Internet Explorer
    • Repair Hosts File
    • Remove Policies Set By Infections
    • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    • Remove Temp Files
    • Repair Proxy Settings
    • Repair Windows Updates
    • Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
    • Repair File Associations
    • Ignore drop down list, just select the parent.
  • Restore Important Windows Services
  • Set Windows Services To Default At Start
Once the proper items have been selected, please click on Start. If the program requests you to reboot your machine after running, please allow it to do so. Once you've rebooted please see if your issue persists and post back with the results and any errors/changes you notice.

Hi PhrantiQ,

Update:

I did as you requested and am currently going through the process of cleaning out any nasties.

The removal of Java seems odd in that Windows likes it to run various functions. What happens if I was to uninstal it?

So I have taken the option to disable it in the IE8 for now.

Java is not used by Windows to run Windows based items. It is used to run online, web based items though. However many users never even need it. Also you can remove it and then go about your business, however if a site pops up requiring it, you can always just reinstall it and get the latest version.

Sounds good, please let me know if I can help in any other way. Thanks for being so patient with me through this, as some of my responses were quite delayed.
