Did that work or not? Windows update issues are tricky and may require several steps to solve.

That has fixed 8 of the 10 updates, now have these 2 that loop back after reboot. The wireless icon hasn't change.

That is progress, I will work on the updates and fix the icon once the updates are working.

Step 1

Please go here download the Fix WU utility to your desktop.
Right click and run as administrator.
Once it completes retry the updates.
If the updates work then stop and post that they worked.
If the updates did not work then go to step 2.

Step 2

Download and run the System Update Readiness tool. This tool runs a one-time scan for inconsistencies that may prevent future servicing operations.
Under the resolution section there are a series of downloads:

All supported x86-based versions of Windows Vista

All supported x64-based versions of Windows Vista

All supported x86-based versions of Windows Server 2008

All supported x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008

All supported IA-64-based versions of Windows Server 2008

All supported x86-based versions of Windows 7

All supported x64-based versions of Windows 7

All supported x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2

All supported IA-64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2

Download the one in red.

  • Please select the correct version for your computer and download it to your desktop.
  • Right click the icon on your desktop and select Run as administrator.
  • Follow the prompts to install and run the System Update Readiness Tool. The tool scans for inconsistencies on your computer and fixes them as it's being installed.
  • Even if the progress bar seems to stop, the scan is still running, so don't cancel the process.
  • Once it completes you can reboot the computer and try to run updates.
  • If it does not work then prepare to reply and attach file. Go here:
  • C:\Windows\logs\cbs
  • Click the file CheckSur.log and click attach to attach it to your next post.

Please follow the instructions and let me know about the updates and post the file if necessary.

Tried both and no joy. There isn't a file with .log but here are the 2 that have a log of process.

Hi CompCav, I am going away to Fiji for 8 days tomorrow, I am pretty sure they wont have Wi-Fi on the small islands I'm visiting so would it be possible if you could leave this open until I come back? Thanks again for all your help, I feel I owe you a beer or 2! Regards, Dom.

Step 1.

Here is how to retrieve your WindowsUpdate.log file and upload it:

  • Click the Start button Posted Image then click Computer
  • Double click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  • Right-click on the WindowsUpdate.log file, and select Copy. It may show as just WindowsUpdate(without the .log extension).
  • Go back to your Desktop, right-click on your desktop, and select Paste. You should now see a file on your Desktop called WindowsUpdate(.log)
  • Right-click on this file, and use Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder
  • A new file, also called WindowsUpdate, but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  • Please upload this new file in your next reply.

Step 2.

Here is how to retrieve your CBS.log file and upload it:

  • Click the Start button Posted Image then click Computer
  • Double click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  • Find and double click on the Logs folder, and then inside the Logs folder, the CBS folder
  • Right-click on the CBS.log file, and select Copy. It may show as just CBS (without the .log extension).
  • Go back to your Desktop, right-click on your desktop, and select Paste. You should now see a file on your Desktop called CBS(.log)
  • Right-click on this file, and use Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder
  • A new file, also called CBS, but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  • Please upload this new file in your next reply.

You will have uploaded two zip files with two separate posts.

Hi compcav

Thanks for keeping this open. On my return I had a few updates waiting and all worked bar 1, here is the offending item.

Welcome back and thank you for posting those logs. An expert on these issues, tom982, is helping me with this issue and he has seen something in your registry that bears detailed investigation so I will need you to follow this next set of instructions:

Export registry as hive

  • Click on the Start Posted Image button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  • Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Then attach the file SideBySide to your next post.

Yes it is too big.

Large File Upload

Since the file is too large to attach here, please upload it to SendSpace then post the link in your next response:

Not for a while, only when all the problems started.
