Dear geekstogo community,

This is a minor issue but it has become slightly bothersome. I have full internet access but the wifi bar is not showing (i.e. it either has a red x on it or a yellow star depending on my location). Can someone explain/help me how to get rid of this minor issue, or perhaps there is a bigger underlying issue (not quite sure)?

Operating system: Windows 7

Here is a picture of what it looks like

Thanks,

Thomas

One item I recommend would be a System File Check which should verify the image and the icon settings. To do this you will need to open a Command Prompt as an administrator (right click and Run as administrator). Then you will run the following code line:
SFC /SCANNOW

Hi,

Thank you very much for replying. So I did SFC /SCANNOW and here is what I got:

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

That's good, after a reboot see if it changes at all. Also please follow this step (counting SFC as step one, I'll start on two).
STEP TWO: Toggling Enable/Disable Options
  • Push the 'Windows Key' and 'R' at same time (the 'Windows Key' is located between Ctrl and Alt)
  • Copy and paste or type out the following into the 'Run' window: ncpa.cpl
  • Please click OK

On this window, please check how many network connections you have. Also disable all that you are using by doing the following:
    • 'Right Click'
    • Select Disable from the menu
    • Repeat for all items you're not using
  • Now please disable your wifi connection, then re enable it (same process but select Enable)
Now that we've gone through that, please let me know if any of these have made a single change in your icon showing.

So I followed your instructions. Disabled all of them and then proceeded to enable all of them. Nothing has really changed. I added a picture just to show you what I have on my window.

Not entirely sure why I have like 2 extra wireless connections.

Disable and leave disabled the Wireless Network Connection for 2 and 3, please. See if the icon changes.

Huh to be honest, figured disabling the two false/repeat WiFi's would have taken care of it. I'm about to head to bed/the other room but will look into this more in the morning. Sorry for not having a solution yet, maybe someone else will before I get back.

Try left clicking on the yellow star where the WiFi bars are. You should see your router listed there. Click on the router name and then click on disconnect.

Wait about 30 seconds to 1 min and then click on the router name again. Next click on connect. Close the pop up window and you should see the WiFi
bars on the task bar. If that doesn't work. Un plug the power cord to your router and wait 1 min. Plug it back in and wait a couple of minutes.

You should see your computer connecting.

I have Win 7 and it happens all the time to me :)

I tried that. It didn't work. It's really just an aesthetic thing and I am not really willing to format my computer just for that  .. Thanks for replying by the way!

After doing some more research, we can give this program/repair a shot and by all means it sounds like it should take care of this (though as I haven't had a chance to replicate it or seen it before, not 100% wont lie to you).
STEP THREE: Windows Repairs
  • Please download Windows Repair (AIO - Portable) and go to the 2nd from last tab labeled Start Repairs. Once on this tab, please select the button Start. The warning that pops up can be followed or not, however sometimes running those at this time can be non beneficial or further worsen the issues.

Inside of here, please check all of the following items:
  • Register System Files
  • Repair Icons
  • Remove Temp Files
  • Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
  • Restore Important Windows Services
  • Set Windows Services To Default At Start
Once the proper items have been selected, please click on Start. If the program requests you to reboot your machine after running, please allow it to do so. Once you've rebooted please see if your issue persists and post back with the results and any errors/changes you notice. If you could run through that step and then get back to me with how it goes, that'd be great.
