Are the conflicts still there after right clicking and uninstall and reboot ?

I messed up the reg query command. Let's try it again.

Copy the next 3 line:

reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_BITS /2 > \junk.txt
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS /s >> \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter. Notepad should open. Copy and paste the results from Notepad.

The hardware conflicts moved from IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to the DVD/CD-ROM Drivers
I tried to re-install the drivers but they aren't taking.

Both entries look correct.

When you stop BITS and then Start it again do you get an error?

net stop bits

net start bits

Get regseeker:

http://www.hoverdesk.net/
Then click on Downloads
The downloads are at the bottom. I would use the bottom one where it says RegSeeker Portable 2.5 (.zip No installation. Just unzip in any folder)

http://www.hoverdesk...egSeeker25p.zip

(We do not want the Babylon toolbar! so make sure you uncheck it.)

Download and Save (right click and Open Folder) then right click and Extract All. Extract. This will create a folder Regseeker25p. Inside it will be another Regseeker25p folder and in that will be the regseeker.exe which you need to right click on and Run As Administrator. Select Find in Registry. Uncheck all but HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Type: netsvcs
in the Search For: box.)

Then click on Search! to the right of the box. Wait until it finishes which will take 10-15 minutes.

Now look through the found list. Find the first one that refers to something in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ and double click on it. Regedit will open to that entry. Look for

ServiceSidType

in the right pane. If you find it it should be equal to 0x00000001 (1)

If you don't find it that's OK but if you find one that does not equal (1) then note the name of the service and tell me.

Close regedit and go back to regseeker and double click on the next one.

Note that you will see several ControlSet00x. We don't want them we only want CurrentControl Set.

I've asked my colleagues in our private forum if any of them have ever seen this error.

I don't suppose you have the Windows Disk so you could do a repair install?

OK. Let's try this:

Download the attached bits.reg file and save it. Then right click on it and Merge. Does it give you an error?

Then open a Command window and type:

net start bits

Do you get the same error?

I've been asked to run this one more time:

Download ESET's Service Repair http://kb.eset.com/l...vicesRepair.exe and Save it then double click on it.

IF BITS still won't start then I think it's time to do a repair install assuming you have a windows xp disk and not an as-it-came-from-the factory disk.

http://pcsupport.abo...stxprepair1.htm

Once you do it you will be a couple of hundred patches behind so the first thing you want to do is start IE then Tools, (or Safety) Windows Update. Keep going back until there are no more updates. Then I think I would go to http://www.avast.com/index, click on Download and then get the Free version of Avast.
