Very slow responses from desktop

Hello,

I am experiencing very slow responses in between commands in various programs. I notice especially in outlook, QuickBooks but not limited to these applications. When I look at the task manager I do not notice anything hogging resources. Any help or advice is appreciated. I have not done anything to scan or delete Trojans, etc. I do use a registered up to date eset virus protection.
