This is a fresh XP x86 install into a desktop onto a clean "boot and nuked" sata HDD in good condition.
Some programs need this particular install for their software to work (EasyBCD comes to mind).

I have tried the "usual suspects" that can often cause this type of annoying issue, but I have obviously overlooked something as
Net Framework 2 SP1 will just not install.

- All updates have been done
- No yellow exclamation or question marks in Device manager
- All the latest drivers installed
- Cleaned out Windows temp and pre-fetch folders
- Defraged

- The only software added so far is Melwarebytes pro, Winpatrol plus, PaleMoon browser and ERUNT reg backup.

All .NET Frameworks (except .NF1) were installed from disc before XP update with no error messages.

-Tried installing .NF1 as it might have been needed for HF2 SP1. Still wouldn't install.
-Removed .NF1

-Tried a couple of various solutions indicated here:

The .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 installation fails on a computer that has the .NET Framework 2.0 installed and that is running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000 (explanation).

Failing any insights you may glean from event viewer report, would uninstalling NF2 and then installing .NF2 SP1 worth a try?
To do that I would have to uninstall .NF3.5 SP1 first, then .NF3 SP2, and finally .NF2 SP2

And what happen if you try to install Net Framework 2 SP2?

After trying to install please do this:

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

To anyone else with this problem:

Unregister and re-register the XP Windows Installer:

Click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER
Click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER

I'm sure it was this that did the trick for me
