Sorry for the delay. The dentist called and had a cancellation so I had to rush over there.

Frst is still seeing:

HKCU\...0c966feabec1\InprocServer32: [Default-shell32] ATTENTION! ====> ZeroAccess?

I believe this refers to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1

So let's look and see if there is anything to worry about:

copy the next 3 lines:

reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1" /s > %userprofile%\desktop\junk.txt
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F3130CDB-AA52-4C3A-AB32-85FFC23AF9C1}" /s > %userprofile%\desktop\junk.txt
notepad %userprofile%\desktop\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open. Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply. Close notepad. Close the Command Window.

Normally the first entry does not exist:
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

The second should say:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F3130CDB-AA52-4C3A-AB32-85FFC23AF9C1}
(Default) REG_SZ Microsoft WBEM New Event Subsystem

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F3130CDB-AA52-4C3A-AB32-85FFC23AF9C1}\InprocServer32
(Default) REG_EXPAND_SZ %systemroot%\system32\wbem\wbemess.dll

The registry doesn't seem to have anything it shouldn't. Not sure why FRST is showing something there. Let's try aswMBR:
Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
uncheck trace disk IO calls
Click the "Scan" button to start scan
On completion of the scan (Note if the Fix button is enabled (not the FixMBR button) and tell me) click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

I assume you mean speedfan. Normally it works quite well. You can try Core Temp: http://alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I'm not seeing any malware. Since Speedfan didn't work for you then I would uninstall it.

I see your system uses Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Version: 10.1.0.1008). Older versions of this program are known to cause lockups. Go to the Intel site and run their driver update utility:

http://www.intel.com.../support/detect

See if they offer you a newer version. (Latest version is 12.8.0.1016 but some PC makers will tweak their stuff so that the generic drivers won't work and then you can only use drivers from Acer.) I have heard you can just uninstall it and Windows will use its generic drivers but I was never brave enough to do that.

If you can download and run speccy it will tell you the condition of your hard drive and the temperatures.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System. (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Attach the file to your next post.

Your Search is complaining of corruption. Go into Control Panel, Indexing Options, Advanced and Rebuild OK.

I've got to catch the noon (PST) ferry and will be off island until Sunday and I don't know when I will have internet access so you may want to go back to your original topic and post the speccy log there.

There are several alternatives to Open Office. Haven't tried them since Open Office works OK for what little I use it. You might try LibreOffice: http://www.libreoffice.org/

Speecy did download after a long pause. I've had the Acer on for about three hours now with only one lock-up and the temperature reading supplied is 43 degrees.

I assume you are off island for Thanksgiving. To you and your family, a very happy holiday! I'll get back to you next week.

Intel Driver Update Utility requires a working copy of Java in order to run. Also go in to the Control Panel and select java, Security, and make sure the slider is one notch below the top. (Put it back to the top when you are done.) Check that Java is working by going to http://java.com/en/d...d/installed.jsp and click on Verify Java Version

Hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Intel Drive Update upgraded my WiFi, I think... who can tell? Took a long time. As you suggested, had to download JAVA... which kept crashing my computer. Not much important happened. I was reviewing some work last night, off line, and within a one hour period I had two lock-ups.

Documents in Open Office that have been saved, are lost after experiencing a crash. After rebooting, the document turns into a series of hatch marks. Can't restore. And now when I reboot, the computer insists on checking my C Drive... further slowing things up.
Thanx...

All I see from Speccy is that it is running a bit warm at 65 C and that the hard drive has no errors but is complaining that it has been dropped:

BF G-sense error rate 001 (001) Data 0000003889

The main reason I wanted you to run Speedfan is that it gives you a real time temp reading so you can see if it climbs while in use.

Do your lockups only happen while running Open Office?

You might want to go into Control Panel, Power Options and change Turn Off hard Disk while on AC to Never. Currently it is set at 15 minutes.

If when it locksup you lose control but it doesn't crash then something is probably taking all of the CPU. If you leave Process Explorer up but shrunk to a small window you might be able to see what is eating the CPU.

Just noticed my AVAST Anti-Virus is gone! Just like AVG... it has just disappeared.

Sorry for the delay. My own computer choked on a MS update and I had to reload it. Had been planning to do it anyway and switch it to 64 bit but had other stuff planned for today.

I do not see Avast in the Speccy output either. Let's run a new FRST scan and see if anything has changed.
