My External Hard Disk is Samsung Story Station 1.5tb out of which 480gb is free. Its in NTFS format. My OS is Win 7-64 bit Home Premium and I occasionally plug it in MacBook Air.

I did not make any changes on my own but somehow all the folders on the hard disk has converted into "READ ONLY." Im unable to copy files into the hard disk. I use as admin but when I right click a folder go to properties and untick the Read Only, I get "Data Error (Cyclic redundancy check)" Hence, im unable to change the folder properties.

How can I change the property of the folder so that I can save files in the HD without losing any data?

Thanks in advance

Cheers,
Steven

There is another thread on the similar issue:

http://www.geekstogo...26#entry2348726

From the referred link:

Something simple that sometimes works go in device manager deletl driver disconnect reboot system and plug back in.

The data error might be because the system has made it read only, but it could be a problem with the disk. You could also try downloading the diagnostics to test the drive.

Hello Kemasa

Sorry for the late reply. I followed the link and uninstalled the external hard disk but the problem was not solved. Do you recommend any particular diagnostics software to test the drive?

This page seems to have a couple of programs to test it:

I downloaded ESWIN Samsung SMART Utility and am running Short Self Test Diagnostic as we speak.
