As other users have noted, I'm not really sure which category this fits best.

I just upgraded from DSL to Uverse on AT&T. I had 3mbps download and now I'm supposed to have 6mbps down and 1mbps up. It's been normal for the first 2 weeks, but today I noticed a slow download when Adobe Flash player was upgrading. The file was reading slowly. I did an internet speed test and was getting anywhere from 0.9 to 1.1mbps down and about 0.8 to 0.9 upload. I played around with some settings, but didn't fix it.

I called AT&T support, and they tried to troubleshoot but were not much help. They sent a tech to my house and he found this:
1. His own iphone was connecting to my wifi at 7+ mbps consistently.
2. My desktop on a hard wire ethernet cable (slow pc) connects at about 5mbps
3. another laptop than the affected one (almost identical model) also connects at 7+ mbps
4. the "bad" laptop still connects over wifi at 1mbps, but trying it on wired ethernet got me 6+, which is within normal range.

So, it seems that *something* got messed up in the bad laptop that is deliberately limiting the wifi connection to 1mbps, but not the wired connection. I feel like it could be a virus, or some network settings got altered or some software update install messed up my pc.

I have read somewhere about packet settings or such, but I don't know much about this.

To look at the screen, it really seems like something is "telling" the computer to slow the connection.

Any good ideas?

NEW INFO:
---------------------

The problem seems to be improved a little by rebooting and not starting a lot of programs or not opening a lot of windows or tabs in FF browser.

Also, even when the problem is occurring on the slow laptop, it seems to be intermittent. If I run the first speed test, it can register 1.2mbps. But if I let it finish and run another test from the same screen without reloading the entire test page, it might jump back up to normal speeds (6.8 to 8.4mbps). It can be normal 1 out of 4 tries, or sometimes after the first "good" trial test, it get give me 4 or 5 tests in a row that go fast.

Also, when I try a real download of a medium size file from a download server, it will give me the same behavior as the speed tests, where approx. 1 in 4 trials is normal speed. But if I pause the download, and then resume, and do this for about 3 or 4 cycles, by the time I hit the fast speed, it will download the entire file at a good clip.

What this appears to the viewer is like the speed almost needs to "warm up" before it starts screaming. And each time you stop, it has to start over again and get up to speed. It also reminds me of the old dial-up modem handshake sequence, where it connects at the fastest speed and then falls back to slower speeds until it can get a steady connection. The first attempt usually doesn't prove itself so it falls back, but later attempts max out the downstream speed.

Just my lay person observations.

Thanks again for your help.

People who help like myself post here in there free time.

Anyway to the matter at hand.

Run this tool to aquire the best dns server for your machine.
http://code.google.com/p/namebench/

Remove the following program from your machine with Revo free.
http://code.google.com/p/namebench/

AVG 2012 (Version: 12.0.3222)

Reboot the machine.

Install and run Ccleaner........................................You really should not use the registry cleaner!!!!
http://www.piriform....wnload/standard

Run the Cleaner.
Hit the tools button then the start up button and disable all items.

Reboot the machine.

Install Either Avast or Avira.

http://www.filehippo...vast_antivirus/
http://www.filehippo...wnload_antivir/

Open your copy of autoruns and un-tick the items below.

These are loacted under the "Task Scheduler" Tab.

+ "GoogleUpdateTaskMachineCore.job" "Google Installer" "Google Inc." "c:\program files\google\update\googleupdate.exe" "2/15/2012 8:43 PM"
+ "GoogleUpdateTaskMachineUA.job" "Google Installer" "Google Inc." "c:\program files\google\update\googleupdate.exe" "2/15/2012 8:43 PM"

+ "ROC_SYS_TASK_DELETE.job" "" "" "c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\avg april 2013 campaign\avg-secure-search-update.exe" "3/27/2013 8:26 AM"

Close autoruns.

Hit the Start button then.
Right Click My computer
Properties
Harwdare Tab
Device Manager.
Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers.
There most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers!!
Make sure and un-install All of them prior to rebooting.
Reboot the machine.
Another request will be made to reboot after the initial.
Reboot again.

Now test your machine and report the outcome.

No problem, just wanted to make sure you were still around ;)

So, I have some concerns about the above steps before I take any actions.

1. Regarding AVG, do I *really* have to delete this? ALL of the other machines that I tested have AVG as well, and they don't have the issue. And I really don't want to start another product just yet unless I have no choice. I am used to AVG. Please advise.

2. Uninstall all IDE controllers? Won't that cripple my system? Please explain what this does and why it would fix the issue.

3. Where is Revo free?

4. Why should I not use Registry Cleaner?

1. AVG is problematic and can cause issues with internet as well as norton and mcafee I help out on a couple other forums and have seen these three antivirus apps rain destruction on machines more often than not.

2. Only the primary ide channels windows will re-install the drivers on the reboot, it is like a known step that can speed up old xp machines.

As far as Ccleaner and the reg cleaner part.

A registry cleaner will not increase your system's speed or performance, and has the potential to break your registry to the point that your PC is no longer bootable.
We strongly advise that people stay away from any of the registry cleaners out there.
Go HERE to get more information about why registry cleaners aren't needed.

Thanks to Sari for the explanation

Just a note: Before attempting to clean or fix any registry you should always make a backup of it first just in case something goes wrong.

OK, now I am a little confused.

Is ccleaner good or bad? Is it considered a registry cleaner too? Is rshaffer61 recommending to NOT use ccleaner as well as any other similar program, or is ccleaner the ONLY one that is suggested to use?

@rockmilk,
If I really really want to leave AVG in place, is there some way I can still address the speed issue without messing with AVG? As noted before, other machines have AVG and work fine, and THIS machine worked fine 2 weeks ago with no major changes EXCEPT I switched from DSL to Uverse and there was an adobe flash update and some normal windows updates.

In other words, this machine, with all installations it currently has, and with all settings it currently has, never had a wi-fi speed issue with DSL, other than those related to the power of the hardware and heavy resource usage at the time. Once it switched to Uverse, the speed issues started, even from a clean startup with no programs open except the browser.

Is there something that can be done with packet sizes or other networking settings that might be responsible for this issue?

In the alternative, is there a way I can boot into a small linux screen from a USB that will test the speed without being hamstrung by the current software settings? I.E., make sure this hardware is ok, but something installed is restricting the speed?

The problem looks to me to be either 1. wifi adapter on this machine doesn't like the wifi router 2. wifi adapter takes more power which slows the streaming speed (unlikely since similar machine works and this one worked before with wifi) 3. wifi router is acting weird (again unlikely since other machine does wifi)

Other parts of Ccleaner are ok to use but GTG and most tech forums do not recommend using any registry cleaner for the reasons I posted.
There is a registry cleaner app included with Ccleaner and that is what we do not advise to use it.

You can re-install AVG at any time I would like you to follow my steps as a diagnostic and when you have completed all of the steps then post a new minitoolbox log and tell me how the machine is doing.

Ccleaner is fine just do not use the registry cleaner function contained in the program.

Not to worry as we don't close topics in this part of the forum. We will wait for you no matter how long it takes. Usually if I don't see a response in a week I might post a reminder and ask about any progress being made.
