I am being swampped by pop-up and the dreaded Derbiz.com thingy. Its driving me barmy. I've installed adaware and spyware S&D, but its not cleared everything.

Also my anti virus software keeps deleting my hijackthis log file, any ideas why?

Cheers for any help

Welcome to GTG.

I think I know why your antivirus is deleting the log files. Norton can get paranoid at times and from what I see here, it's detecting a few lines here (trojans) as being a trojan itself. Long story short, it's a problem on Norton's side. It's normal actually, just too much protection if you ask me.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download ETRemover and unzip it. Don't run it yet.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Right click on this link http://www.greyknigh...lO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\windows\system32\eliteyfg32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\temp532.exe
c:\eied_s7.cab
c:\ex.cab
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Run ETRemover.exe now.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. Once it's done, you may click the Close button. When asked if you want to logoff, choose Yes.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi cheers for the help. Sorry its taken a while to get back to you but I've been at a festival all weekend.

anyway heres my latest log file

oh couple of things dont know how important/relevant they are.
in deleting the C;\ex.cab file, i couldnt find this file but i now have one called ex_cab.vir?

ETRemover came up with a message to run in safe mode even though I was doing so.

Can I use Cleanup! at any time as it seems to be pretty good at getting rid of junk.

My screen res and windows theme has changed after rebooting

some of my e-mails appear to have disappeared both read and unread ones?

Cheers

MAzz

Can you change your wallpaper and resolution back?

Yes, you may run CleanUp regularly if you wish. It's used to get rid of junk files. It also gets rid of *.bak and other files. So if you need those files (some user's do, if you don't know, you probably don't need them), you have to customize the CleanUp program.

Upload that file (ex_cab.vir) to this site and see if it's a bad file. If so, delete it.

What emails? Are they web based or a client like Outlook Express? Try synching it online again and see if you can get them back if you are using Outlook Express.

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

the ex_cab.vir contained a trojan. I think i know what it was. I used pandasoftware link you supplied and used their virus scan, and i did notice it renamed an infected file. I suspect the .vir file was originally the ex.cab file.

As far as the e-mail problem goes I thinkCleanup! caused the problem. I have an online account thats set up to automatically forward any recieved e-mails. Having a quick look at the cleanup! settings it removes some e-mail cache (from news groups I think) I think the way my e-mail was set up ment it was deleted.
I've emailed the email provider to see if they are able to retireve any recent e-mails.

If not do you know of any way to retrieve files/emails deleted by cleanup!?

Cheers for the help
apart from the e-mail trouble hopefully my troubles will be over for a while

Hi Mazz, sorry about that. It shouldn't delete your emails though. Do you know what format your emails were saved in? Newsgroup is something else. CleanUp doesn't have a backup feature, so I have to say probably no. See if you can retrieve it from your ISP like you said.

OK, let's fix that classic theme problem at least.

OK, download the Luna theme at
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XP style.

you my friend are a legend, one more quick thing. the Panda Software Scan picked up these files:

Adware:Adware/FavoriteMan: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32im64.dll
Adware:Adware/Atlas:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32OA9.dll
Adware:Adware/SuperSpider: C:\WINDOWS\msxmidi.exe
Adware:Adware/NetPals
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ATPartners.inf
Spyware:Spyware/YourSiteBar :
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ysbactivex.inf

After all of the above these files are actually still there. Can I just delete these or do i need to go through another process?

Cheers
