Hi!

I am hoping you guys can work your magic once again!
I have a HP Presario Compaq laptop - a copy of the specs is attached. Unit was used by all in the family so it got full of all sorts of software & eventually became unusable.
I took it to a local PC shop where they wiped the hard drive & reloaded Windows7, however the Product Key was just about unreadable so the guy told me that they eventually got Windows7, but somehow it seemed that they had a hacked copy.....
Got it home & seemed to be running OK until fairly soon I noticed it to be loading & responding a bit slow. As a test I ran it alongside another one of the same laptops in the house ran it on an online film streaming service. The 'cleaned' PC ran it's CPU up to 100% in about 3 minutes, while the other unit ran the film OK at about 60%.
Since then I notice the 'cleaned' unit generally runs everything at about 80-100% CPU.

I ran the Minitoolbox programme to see what is on it & I have pasted the results below:

Nice to see you again, first and foremost I want to remind you I post in 'steps' and to post back results for each step. Alright, now let's get to this!

STEP ONE: Please Review These Recommendations
I've noticed a few items being out of date, in which I recommend you to look into Update Checker to check and help you update your items. Then continue using it down the line. Beyond this, I see torrenting programs which can lead to trouble, infections and more. Yes, they are legal/OK but if you are not using it as such - I recommend you go to your Control Panel and the Add/Remove Programs. STEP TWO: Startup Cleanup (Step One)
  • Please download Autoruns by Sysinternals. Once that has downloaded, please extract the files to a location of your choosing. Once extracted, I'd like you to run 'autoruns.exe'. You should see the Autoruns window open up at this time, in which we will give it a minute to fully populate the lists. After the lists have been populate I'll need you to save it as a text file, you can do this by following these steps:
  • Go to 'File' and select 'Save'
  • When saving change the 'Save as type:' to a 'Text (*.txt)' file type (you do this by dropping the list down using the arrow and selecting the file type by clicking on it).
Now that the file is saved, please locate where you saved it and open it up. Once you have the text file opened up, copy and paste all the content into a reply on here.
We'll go ahead and go from there bud!

Wow!, that was painfully slow! During thw whole time the CPU was pegged out at 100% physical memory never varied between 45-62%.

The only torrent programme I have knowingly installed was uTorrent some days ago, so that is now-uninstalled, but I must add that the performance was already poor before that installation.

I ran the Autoruns software...results are below:

Excuse the interjection folks but I noticed the following from the OP;

I took it to a local PC shop where they wiped the hard drive & reloaded Windows7, however the Product Key was just about unreadable so the guy told me that they eventually got Windows7, but somehow it seemed that they had a hacked copy.....

A reputable tech store would not use a hacked copy as it would come back to haunt them, however as you have mentioned the possibility it is important that you check it out, one of the steps along the way is to obtain your product key which you should keep in a safe place for any possible future use.

Have you tried updating Windows since you had the notebook returned to you by the store, updates failing to install would suggest a problem + MS would detect any irregularities with the OS.

To find and make a note of the 25 digit product key for the OS that is presently in use on your computer you can use Belarc Advisor.

To check the validity of the OS product key that is in use on your computer;

  • Please download WVCheck by Artellos from one of the mirrors below;

    Artellos.com (exe)
    Artellos.com (zip)

  • After the download, run WVCheck.exe
  • As indicated by the prompt, This program can take a while depending on your hard drive space.
  • Once the program is done, copy the contents of the notepad file as a reply.

PhrantiQ,

As you will see from the posts I had with Phillpower2, my Windows installation on this laptop is at least OK.

Have you had a chance to review the results of running the Autoruns software?.................

PhrantiQ,

All the best for the New Year!! Hopefully it's a good one for you!

I am overseas & web access is not so easy, so it has been some weeks since I have been able to get a good enough connection to check G2G......

Do you have any update for me on my laptop issue? I ran the Autoruns software & posted the resluts, plus Phillpower2 confirmed my Windows7 licence is valid, so that leaves me with the issue of why the CPU runs so high for no apparent reason.

I do not have the problem laptop with me but I just wanted to check in with you guys & see if there has been any update.....Hope to hear from you soon.

Happy New Year OZDOUG :thumbsup:

I haven't seen PhrantiQ on the forums for a couple of weeks I`m afraid.

There is no point in getting into to much depth with this until you have the notebook in front of you, you can though meanwhile familiarize yourself with how to analyse Autoruns with the tutorial here

If PhrantiQ is still not available when the time comes I will be more than happy to help you with it if that`s ok.

Hi Phillpower2....& thanks for getting back to me! :)
(I hope everything is OK with PhrantiQ)
A few more weeks & I should be back in civilisation, then I will look again at my laptop.
Thanks for the Autorun info....I'll certainly have a look at it! :thumbsup:

Take care!
