Not even sure if I'm in the right section, so feel free to move it if I'm not. Every time I try to uninstall some of my programs (not sure if it happens with them all, as I'm only trying uninstall a few)I get the following error.

Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writeable.

(I don't even know where to look to verify, let along know HOW to verify)

Along with this ERROR I seem to only be able to run SOME of my programs if I right-click and run as administrator ... not sure if this is associated in any way, but I don't understand why this is happening either. It makes no sense to me as I'm the ONLY person who uses this laptop and therefore I AM the administrator.

Please Help Me Out.

P.S. I've already run this through the Virus Cleaning Section and was given a clean slate by my Tech here at GeekstoGo

Hi

This can occur if Windows Installer Logging is enabled, but the Windows Installer engine cannot properly write the uninstallation log file. This condition can occur if the Windows Installer's application heap becomes freed and thus loses the information on where to store the log file. When this occurs, Windows Installer attempts to write to the location 'C:\Windows\System32' and addresses it as a file. Proper behavior would be to write to the following location and file name: 'C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\MSIxxxxxx.log'.

To work around this issue, stop and restart the Explorer.exe process using Task Manager.

http://support.micro....com/kb/2564571

See if that sheds any light. Let us know.

Thanks
Joe :)

Can't find a solution and I a have never seen that error myself.

When you Google Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable. It all leads back to the site I had already provided for you.

I'm still looking into it.

Thanks
Joe :)

one of the reasons I came here is that google didn't really help ... I tried one of the other links that gave a similar workaround and still nothing. maybe someone else has seen it ... I hope.

thanks

I hope so too. The only other thing I could thing of that you could try is System File Checker,

Try using System File Checker,
System File Checker merely makes sure that all system files are where they should be. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, then type cmd in the Start Search box. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

At the command prompt, type the following command, sfc /scannow and then press ENTER.

Posted Image
The scan may take some time to complete. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. If required, Windows may prompt you to insert the Operating System CD.

Hi,

@Moondog: Can you provide the name of one of the programs you can't uninstall?

Also I would like to see what is recorded on the Windows Event Viewer.

Please download Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso (VEW) and save the file on the Desktop
- Execute the VEW tool and check the following options:
  • Select Log to Query
    * Application
    * System
  • Select type to list
    * Error
    * Information
  • Number or date of events: 20
- Press Run

Copy & Paste the generated log to your reply.

Hi,

I want to check one thing on the Windows Registry...

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below according to your OS Architecture and save it to your Desktop.
SystemLook (32-bit)
SystemLook (64-bit)

  • Double-click SystemLook/SystemLook_x64 to run it.
  • Accept the prompt Allow the program to make changes to this computer (UAC prompt)
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :Reg
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\System

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hi,

Let's try to fix a windows service that is failing to start and see if it helps...

  • Download the CscService.reg file attached to this post and save it to the Desktop
  • Double click the file to import into the registry, accept the Security Warning and next you will see a dialog similar to the following image, accept that.
    Posted Image
  • if everything work as expected you will see a windows with this: "The keys and values contained in ..\CscService.reg have been successfully added to the registry."

Restart the computer and then repeat the steps on post #7 to get a new log. Please post that.

Hi,

According to the new log you need to free some space on the system drive! Windows to work properly need a minimum of 15% free space on all the drives.

My C: drive has more than 15% free ... my D: drive (recovery) does not and I have no idea what to do or how to do it to free up space on that drive.
