The optional updates installed perfectly fine but if I tried to get the important one it would start downloading, make no progress, a second later notify me of a failure due to error 80073712. It's been the same message every time whatever I've tried. The computer otherwise seems to be in working condition, after awhile of continual crashing and freezing despite clean malwarebyte scans in both normal and safe mode. (I can't remember when it stopped acting up, maybe it was after I uninstalled adobe flash/shockwave/air/etc).
1) Following the Window's help guide I I repair windows using the system repair dvd then used the System Update readiness tool (kb947821 for win7x64) from the windows website. Then I tried to get the update (KB2875783)to no avail.
2) The microsoft website had some automatic download-me-program-i'll-mess-around thing to uninstall old updates or something (it was a few days ago I forget). I ran system update readiness again (?can't remember) and then tried to get the update. To no avail.
before either of the above two attempts I ran sfc /scannow and it said there were no integrity violations. I ran it again today and it said the same.
3) Today I also tried this solution's "method 2". The catroot2 folder could not be found and that step didn't really work out. I check the folder and opened the dberr.txt file and found a list of suspicious looking errors:

I have no idea what's happening. I don't believe I have any restore points made for some reason (oops). I've been having a lot of trouble trying to back up my data (200kbps...). I'll probably go run a disk check after I post this.
