Hi everyone.

I have an old Dell Dimension 3000 that I use for office tasks/internet. A few weeks ago I installed a new WD IDE hard disc as the primary drive. Since install the pc has been working fine with windows xp.

Today however on boot I get the message 'Primary drive 0 not found'. In the BIOS Drive Config the Primary Master drive is listed as Unknown Device. Last night the drive seemed to be making a different noise that usual. I have checked the cables and all seem secure.

I tried to boot WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostic using the optical drive but I get the message:

NO DRIVE FOUND

ERROR STATUS CODE 0120

(The hard drive activity light does light up tho). After the error message, screen goes to A:\>, typing dlgdiag5.exe just goes back to error message.

Any help with further diagnosis would be much appreciated. Thanks

You could try replacing the drive cable. Other than that putting it in an external case and trying it on another computer would test to see if the drive is the problem (which it sounds like it is).

Hi DomTwan,

Last night the drive seemed to be making a different noise that usual.

If the hard drive is making sounds and since it's a mechanical device, you first have to assume it's an issue with the mechanical function of the drive, weather it's a new or old drive.

Do any of These sounds sound like what you may hear.

Thanks
Joe :)

Many thanks for these quick replies!

The sound was quite faint and it seemed just a bit more clicky than usual, hard to discern really but noticeable enough for me to put my ear close to case and think 'That's weird'. PC performed ok tho last night and only started misbehaving on boot up today.

I am going to try it in my other PC but I need to get a SATA to IDE adapter.

Thanks again for you help.

It may be defective or the cover screws need to be torqued. If you don't have a torque screwdriver don't ever touch the screws.
