My dvr will not read any dvd's, blank or pre-recorded. Therefore I am unable to record anything from the dvr's hard drive to dvd's. What can I do? Some of this is irreplaceable!

You might try a CD/DVD cleaner.

How will the dvr play the cleaning disc, if it doesn't recognize that there's a dvd in it?

If it is not even spinning a disc upon insertion into the drive, the drive probably needs to be replaced.

If one is available, will a lay-person like me be able to change it out?

Don't know, can't see it from here. ;)

The make and model number might help.
