how do you update a laptop motherboard online? or can a person still do that now?

If an update is available, (check your laptop manufacturer's website), it is possible to "flash the BIOS" on most motherboards these days. It is also fairly easy to 'brick it' (turn the laptop into a door stop) if the specific instructions aren't followed precisely.
