That log appears clean. guess we should go for the last one now!!

Can you give me a little more information on the error? or is this all your getting? "'Unexpected error: quitting'"

Tom,

Great to hear that log is clean. Only two to go now!

As for that error, I suspect it's related to the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program. While it says nothing more than 'Unexpected error: quitting', when I look at the taskbar open program listing, it has a title listing of 'Error' with the multihued MS Antispyware circle.

I also need to ask - I think, after this, it may be time to bite the bullet and learn how to read the HijackThis logs and solve these problems on my own. I get too many calls from family and friends about viruses and their ilk these days.

Scott

Scott,

We have a great training program here Called GeekU. Its something you can do at your own pace. Here is the sign up GeekU

I would suggest uninstalling MicroSoft AntiSpyware when we are done and either reinstalling it or download a diffrent program that I will suggest when we are finished cleaning up this computer from the debts of Hade! :tazz:

If there are parental controls on this account, they will need to be reset after the fix.

Download and install CleanUp! Here
We will use this program later.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

Whoops, missed something, did we? Heh, easy enough to do with the infestation this computer has. It's one sick puppy.

A question: I noticed, when booting into Safe Mode, that an account titled Administrator is available. Do we need to check that, as well? It doesn't show on normal bootup.

Hey, Tom.

The account seems to be working fine now. Just one to go - or two, counting the Administrator account accessible only through Safe Mode. So, here's the log!

Tom,

That account appears to be fine - but on running several programs on a previous account, I noticed a number of malware present. I took care of most of them, but at least three are proving difficult. I'm including an Activescan log for you to see for yourself. The ElieBar keeps jumping to a new directory each time I delete the folder it is currently in, so I'm wondering if I need to delete them all. Also, I've attempted Regedit on the other two, but it seems to be back.

Scott

Scott,

as far as the registry is items, this program should take care of the odd entries on each account.

I think it would serve you well to clean your registry!
  • Please dowload: RegSeeker.
  • Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
  • Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
  • After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
  • Click "Quit RegSeeker".
Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Let me have the HiJackLog with the one account thats having a problem with elite bar. also let me have the uninstall list but doing this:

Open Hijack this in safe mode
  • Click configure
  • Click open unistall manager
  • click save list.
  • Save it to your desktop
  • then post the log results here please
Thanks,

:tazz:

Tom,

I've run RegSeeker on every account as instructed. Considering the thousands of entries removed... All of them end with two registry entries that cannot be removed.

Now, here are the results for the troublesome account.

Scott,

I WILL NOT LET THIS ELITEBAR BEAT US!!!

there now that i got that out of the way....lol.

1. Download ETRemover Here
save it to your desktop, please do not use yet

Boot into safe mode

2. WHEN IN SAFE MODE: Extract the EliteBar Removal Tool zip file into the suggested folder and run the file ETRemoverV130.exe Click "Kill Elite Toobar" button.

3. start>run> type cmd

then copy and paste this line in there

rmdir C:\Documents and Settings\Logan\Favorites\Homelife & Travel

4. Reboot and let me know if that little mother is still there.....

Thanks,

Tom

Ladies and gentlemen, Elitebar has left the building!

Nice work, Tom. Now we've got something called nCase popping up in the last two Activscans though.

Oh, and a note.... I had to modify your CMD line a bit, for it to work. Seems it still has the 8-letter limitation for filenames.

i.e. rmdir C:\Docume~1\Logan\Favori~1\Homeli~1

Thanks for the great help!
