Hi computer minded goons.

My old router broke, so I bought a new one. It set up fairly easily, it's visible to every iPad, iPhone etc.

The only problem is, I can't get it to connect to my actual PC. My PC just refuses to find the network and instead tries to connect to "Realtek PCI family controller" which I have no idea what that is because the new router is netgear and the last one was Belkin.

It's really frustrating. I'm not computer minded but I can do the basics. Except this is seems, even though the old Belkin one was a easy to set up.

I'm running windows 7.

Please help goons!

Hi TheAllyClark :welcome:

Can you tell us if the computer is connected to the router by cable or wireless?

Lets take a look, I need you to use a working computer to download a file and transfer to the bad one using a flash drive.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the flash drive.
Insert the flash drive on the problematic computer, close the browser and run MiniToolBox, check the following options:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (Only Problems)
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi, sorry I can't copy and paste as I still can't get my computer to connect to the internet without actually plugging the Ethernet wire directly into the modem and not using the router.

Here's a screenshot I took on my phone

Hi,

Uninstall BullGuard 8.7, restart and try to access the Internet if it works reinstall BullGuard immediately.

Hi,

That seems to have given me internet access now. So that's great, thanks for the help.

One more quick question, it says I'm connected to "network 4" rather than the name of the connection "NETGEAR499". Does this make a difference. The Ethernet is plugged into the 4th socket in the router so I'm assuming that's why it's being called "network4" ?

One more quick question, it says I'm connected to "network 4" rather than the name of the connection "NETGEAR499". Does this make a difference. The Ethernet is plugged into the 4th socket in the router so I'm assuming that's why it's being called "network4" ?

Good. Make sure you reinstall the program because you shouldn't access the internet without an Antivirus.

The 2nd part you can ignore all that because windows have a weird way to set names. The "network 4" is because somehow is the 4 time windows installed drivers for the network card, I suppose the "NETGEAR499" is your wireless name so it doesn't apply when you are connected by Ethernet cable, sometimes windows mix things and use the wireless network name when a computer have both connections and is connected by cable!
