It was set to off for all drives. I set it to on for my C drive. I got the attached error messages, but when I went back, I found it was set to on anyway. I could not increase the size allocated to restore points from zero because of similar error messages, but once I had created the restore point, I went back and saw that the allocated space had increased to 4%.

Good. Can you get a new MiniToolBox log with the following options checked:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Devices (Only Problems)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
  • List Restore Points
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi,

It seems System Restore is working now, good job

I see you have Malwarebytes installed can you update the program and run a scan, let me know if it finds anything...

On the last log there is an error ACPI: ACPI BIOS... that seems to indicate that your computer needs a BIOS update, I tried to access the Asus site to check the latest version but the web site didn't work for me...

If you need help checking for the BIOS update please post the exact model you have (probably on the back of the laptop) because the full model probably have more letters K72F-...

Hi

Malwarebytes didn't find any issues.

All I can find on the laptop is the model K72F-TY011V. There is also a Check Number - 3673, and elsewhere, it says ID:1A. I have tried to get drivers in the past from the Asus site, and it just doesn't seem to work at all....

HI SleepyDude

Are you still able to help me with this? I don't know how to find the BIOS update. The model number is in the post above.

Strangely, after a few days of working smoothly and quickly, the laptop has really slowed down again, and is again really difficult to use. Wireless still works.

Hi,

Sure the Asus site is working now :) can you enter the BIOS and try to locate the version number?

Can you post a new Minitoolbox log to check the windows event log?

Check only the following:
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Devices (Only Problems)

Hi,

Visit the Asus Drivers page and you can download a BIOS update to version 211 K72FAS211.zip and the program Windows BIOS Flash Utility. You have to install the Windows BIOS Flash Utility and follow the instructions, most likely the file K72FAS211.zip must be extracted...

The last log seems to indicate that you have more than one computer connected to the network with the same name!

The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{F2551FE2-3B33-4E7D-88E5-10348FC56C3E} because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start.

To avoid this problem change the name of one of the computers. To change the name follow the instructions on this page Change Your Computer Name in Windows 7 or Vista.

Thanks Sleepy. All done and working fine now (if still a little slow - but faster than before).

Thanks for all your help and patience.

Ok. Thanks for let me know the result.

I recheck the logs you provide and notice that you need to update Java because it's outdated, Java is critical in terms of Security, it's one of the applications most target by security exploits today.

When java is installed its extremely important to update immediately when you get a notification pop-up from the Java Updater. Or update manually by opening the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel, open the applet called Java on the Update tab click the Update Now button. The program will prompt you to install any new updated version available.
Every time you update Java make sure you uncheck the box asking to Install the Ask Toolbar and make Ask my default search provider.
